Tiles for America

September 02, 2011 by Dr. Lee B. Spitzer

I discovered these Tiles for America commemorating the 9/11 attack while photographing in lower Manhattan in 2008. The precise location was 7th Avenue South on Mulroy Square in Greenwich Village. Dozens of people collaborated to create the tiles, which were hung on a chain link fence. Hardly what one would expect for an art exhibit! I was struck by the poignancy of the messages, the variety of perspectives (religious, political, patriotic, personal) and the outpouring of emotion (compassion, loss, sadness, hope).
