Communication or a Reasonable Facsimile?

June 16, 2011 by Marcia Morrissey

Continued from Page 1

We encourage participating couples to take this tool with them and to continue to use it. Sending an email or note just to let the other person know how we care, or to encourage them can mean so much. This is true not just in marriage relationships—it also can be used between parents and children, family members, or in any important personal relationship.

A few years ago, as the "president couple" Ed and I were invited to a benefit for the family of a local police officer killed in the line of duty. He and his wife had made a Marriage Encounter weekend. A close friend on the force was tasked with cleaning out the officer's locker, and when he opened it, out fell all these little slips of paper. He realized that they were all little notes from the officer's wife, which she had packed in his lunch, to let him know that she was thinking of him.

The officer had kept all of them.

His widow had no idea of this until his friend put them in a bag for her to keep. She described how much that meant to her, to know that her little notes had been so important to her husband.

Someday, the notes would help her to tell their two small children something lovely about their daddy.

Find a Marriage Encounter Weekend near you.
