Does God Really Talk to Us?
November 15, 2010 by Danny Hall
As a pastor I am often asked how to know God's will. I usually warn the inquirer that they will not like my answer. Then I point them to Proverbs 37:4 -- "Delight yourself in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart."
I do believe God speaks today. Yet our task is to be the kind of people who can hear his voice. We do this by making Christ our delight, our highest value. When we are able to set our affections on him, then we are able to hear when he speaks -- whether it is through his Word, through other people, even through the inner promptings of His Spirit. As this occurs, our hearts come more and more in tune with God's.
When I was a fairly new believer, in my sophomore year at Emory University, I had begun to be more and more actively involved in ministry. My growing sense of God's call in my life was rooted in a deep desire to do whatever God wanted. With that heart disposition, the words of Scripture, the input of friends, and the growing sense of God speaking to my heart led me to change my life direction from law school to pastoral ministry.
One of the most intriguing and rewarding aspects of following Christ is that ability to commune with, hear from and follow the Living God.
