Presbymergent: A Reforming Spirit from the Inside

July 26, 2010

Continued from Page 1

Doug Pagitt, in his new book Church in the Inventive Age, makes the case that we are in a new epoch of history, which he calls the "Inventive Age." He writes, "Being the church in the Inventive Age requires us to be open to the spirit of God conducting change in all areas of our systems and structures" (pp. 110-111). Being open and progressive about just a few things will not cut it anymore for the mainline church. The Spirit is moving and bringing about change not just in our theologies, but in all areas of our systems and structures. The Spirit is an inclusive reforming spirit and is ready to move us forward into the future. The question before the mainline church is: will we follow?

Adam Walker Cleaveland serves as Minister for Youth and Young Adults at Asbury United Methodist Church in Livermore, CA and co-founded Presbymergent. Adam blogs at pomomusings, where he writes about youth ministry, theology, and social media. You can find Adam online at adamwc.me, facebook.com/adamwc, and on Twitter at @adamwc.
