Cycles of Optimism: Buddhism's Challenges for Future Generations

July 05, 2010

Continued from Page 1

The list could go on and on. We live in cyclic existence, and there will always be things that need to be improved. Cyclic existence is also the field of bodhisattva practice, so let's go forward with optimism. Let's put our energy into practicing and integrating the Buddha's teachings with our own mindstreams. Let's make sure we study and teach this source of benefit and bliss to others without distorting the teachings in any way.

Ordained in 1977, Bhikshuni Thubten Chodron is an American nun in the Tibetan Buddhist tradition. She has studied extensively with His Holiness the Dalai Lama, Tsenzhap Serkhong Rinpoche, and Zopa Rinpoche among others. With a clear, practical, and humorous style, she teaches Buddhist philosophy and meditation worldwide, including to prisoners, andengages in interfaith dialogue. She was resident teacher at Amitabha Buddhist Center in Singapore and at Dharma Friendship Foundation in Seattle. In 2003 she founded Sravasti Abbey, a Tibetan monastic community in Newport, Washington, U.S.

She has published numerous Dharma books, including Buddhism for Beginners; Working with Anger; Open Heart, Clear Mind; and Guided Meditations on the Stages of the Path. Visit www.sravasti.org and www.thubtenchodron.org for a variety of Dharma teachings -- written, audio, and video.
