Deconstructing Christmas EPISODE 45

For those who have reconsidered many aspects of their Christian faith, celebrating Christmas isn't easy. Maybe you want to but feel weird, or maybe you don't want to celebrate but your family expects you to. Either way, Christmas can be a difficult season to navigate for those who have deconstructed their faith. Let's talk about it. Check out Keith's latest book, SECOND CUP WITH KEITH , today! Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. See pcm.adswizz.com for information about our collection and use of personal data for advertising.

Episode 1

Reading Scripture Thru The Lens Of Christ

Welcome to Second Cup With Keith. Grab a cup of coffee and join Keith Giles as he explores the restoration and transformation in Christ. In this first episode, we discuss how to approach scripture in a more Christ-centric way. We have been taught to look at the Bible as one single book; Old Testament and New Testament. However, take a look at the Bible as God tells us it was intended, through the lens of Jesus. This approach might seem radical, but it will lead us to a closer understanding of Christ. In this episode, we cover: A historical reading and interpretation of the Bible Shifting our thinking towards a more Christ-centric view of Scripture Knowing the Father through the Son *New episodes released every other Monday Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. See pcm.adswizz.com for information about our collection and use of personal data for advertising.

Episode 2

What Is The Gospel?

Can you explain the gospel to a stranger? Oftentimes, people tend to arrive at their answer, not from Jesus or the Gospel of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, but other books in the Bible. The best place to find the answer is in Jesus own words. The only definition of the gospels, given in the gospels, is from the mouth of Jesus. In this episode, we dive into a version of Christianity that aligns with Jesus intention and explains the question, what really is the gospel?. In this episode, we cover: The foundational misunderstanding of the definition of the gospel Looking at Jesus own words for clarification. *New episodes released every other Monday Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Episode 3

Women Saved Through Child-birth?

Many verses in the Bible are challenging because they seem to say one thing, but after learning more of the context, you then gain a deeper understanding of the meaning. In this episode, we dissect a puzzling verse of scripture, 1 Timothy 2:15. Pauls statements have often been misunderstood or taken out of context to insinuate that womens salvation is contingent upon bearing children. It has often been used to make women feel that the only way they can fulfill their purpose in the body of Christ is through childbearing. By looking at the historical and cultural context of the time and location, we can clear the confusion and see that this verse has nothing to do with salvation, personal worth, or value in the kingdom of God. In this episode, we cover: The Historical reality of childbirth Artemis worship in ancient Greece The backlash to Paul in Ephesus Jesus Unbound. *New episodes released every other Monday Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Episode 4

3 Lies Christians Believe

Unfortunately, Christians are not exempt from believing false truths. We tend to take the Bible out of context which can lead to lies and misconceptions being shared. What lie have you subscribed to only to realize youd been misled? Its important to understand the actual Word of God. In this discussion, we unpack 3 common lies many Christians tend to believe. In this episode, we cover: The idea that the gospel is about saying a prayer so you can go to heaven The idea that on the cross, the Father turned his face away from Jesus The idea that God is too holy to be in the presence of sin. *New episodes release every other Monday *Connect with Keith on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Episode 5

Rethinking Biblical Inspiration

What does it mean to say that the Bible or the Scriptures are inspired? The way we are typically taught to think about the inspiration of Scripture is that it is God-breathed and therefore it's inspired by God. In this episode, we look at biblical inspiration in another way and see how God speaks truth to us, not only through Scripture, but through a variety of means. In this episode, we cover: Looking at inspiration of Scripture through a different lens Surprising insight into 2nd Timothy 3 16-17 There is more to know than what is in the New Testament. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. See pcm.adswizz.com for information about our collection and use of personal data for advertising.

Episode 6

3 Christian Views Of Hell

More than likely, you probably only know one view of hell; the doctrine of eternal conscious tournament. This is the view that anyone who dies apart from Christ will face the judgment and then will be sent to an endless torment in the flames and fires of hell for all. Shockingly, the early church and the history of this doctrine shows three different views of hell. In this episode, we unpack each one. In this episode, we cover: Where does the doctrine of eternal conscious torment actually come from? Conditional immortality Universal reconciliation Jesus Undefeated: Condemning The False Doctrine Of Eternal Torment. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. See pcm.adswizz.com for information about our collection and use of personal data for advertising.

Episode 7

The End Times

In this episode, we discuss how the modern accepted view of Revelation is more of a two-hundred-year-old theory rather than a two-thousand-year-old prophecy. Many Christian churches have often been stuck in an endless holding pattern waiting for Jesus to come back and fix everything. But Jesus is already here with us, fulfilling and affirming the new covenant promise. Again, when we go back to Jesuss own words and the language of the time, we can decipher His intent and have a deeper understanding of His meaning. He does not ask us to wait for Him but calls us to be the incarnation of Christ in the world. You and I are the fulfillment of Gods plan to change the world from the inside out. In this episode, we cover: John Nelson Darbys end-times rapture theory Apocalyptic hyperboleReal-world judgments and warnings spoken through metaphorical language of cosmic destruction Jesus Unexpected: Ending the End Times to Become the Second Coming Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. See pcm.adswizz.com for information about our collection and use of personal data for advertising.

Episode 8

Penal Substitution And The Cross

Lets counter a commonly held belief of many Christians: God is wrathful and vengeful, requiring blood sacrifice, and only through the crucifixion are we forgiven. We unpack this theory and find that Gods primary response to our sin is not wrath or anger but forgiveness. The crucifixion is not about sacrifice but rather submitting to the will of God and showing obedience. In this episode, we cover: Penal Substitutionary Atonement Theorythe theory of the crucifixion and the resurrection and atonement of Christ on the cross Gods views on sacrifice and offerings The old and new covenant Jesus Unforsaken: Substituting Divine Wrath with Unrelenting Love Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. See pcm.adswizz.com for information about our collection and use of personal data for advertising.

Episode 9

The Old Covenant Is Obsolete

Following up from episode 8 where we discussed penal substitutionary atonement theory, this episode goes into detail about the Old Covenant being obsolete. A lot of Christians seem to be confused by this due to learning the opposite idea from the pulpit. We are given the idea that Christianity is Judaism with a cross on top. However, thats not the case at all. It's not about laws, but about becoming people who abide in Christ, so that Christ abides in us. When that happens, we become people who are capable of loving and being loved. In this episode, we cover: Hebrews 8:13 The differences between the old covenant and new covenant Living the beatitudes - Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. See pcm.adswizz.com for information about our collection and use of personal data for advertising.

Episode 10

Why I Reject The Five-fold Ministry

Do you believe in the Five Fold Ministry? Many Christians believe this concept to be a hierarchy of the five leadership positions that are essential for the health and growth of every Christian church in the world. However, believing that these handful of verses are to be used as the standard for every church until the end of time is not a good idea. Learn how these verses have been misunderstood and why I reject the idea that there are only five main gifts in the church today. In this episode, we cover: What is the 5 Fold Ministry? Why Pauls list should be viewed as chronological, not a hierarchy Pauls two other lists: the 8 Fold Ministry & the 7 Fold Ministry Practicing the 58 One-Anothers in love. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. See pcm.adswizz.com for information about our collection and use of personal data for advertising.

Episode 11

Worm Theology

You are loved. Dismiss any theology that tells you otherwise. In this episode we'll discuss: *Where Worm Theology originates *Why it's not supported by the Scriptures *Who you really are *Why learning to receive love from others is key to the whole process Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. See pcm.adswizz.com for information about our collection and use of personal data for advertising.

Episode 12

Embracing Mystery

Embracing Mystery Rather than talk about all that you think you know about God (which if we're honest is practically nothing), let's talk about all that we do NOT know about God (which is practically everything). In this episode we'll discuss: *Why it's dangerous to make yourself the standard for all truth *Why it's important to admit we've been wrong before and will be wrong again *How to hold loosely to our beliefs *What it means to embrace the mystery of God Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. See pcm.adswizz.com for information about our collection and use of personal data for advertising.

Episode 13

Why Youre Reading Romans Wrong

There's a reason why so many Christians love the book of Romans: Because they really don't know what it says. In this episode we'll discuss: *Why Romans Ch.1 doesn't condemn homosexuality *Why Romans Ch.13 isn't a call to support the Government or the Military *Why Romans isn't a recipe for how to get saved and go to heaven. *Why so many Christians misunderstand Paul's entire point in Romans. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. See pcm.adswizz.com for information about our collection and use of personal data for advertising.

Episode 14

Jesus, Paul And Women

Believe it or not, women were central to the development of early Christianity. They were disciples of Jesus, funding his ministry, and even serving as Deacons, Prophets, Missionaries and even Apostles in the early Church. In this episode we'll look at: *How Jesus empowered women *Women named by Paul as fellow servants *How the words of Paul and Jesus have been misunderstood and mistranslated to subjugate women *Why Jesus's words about divorce are about setting women free from abusive husbands *How male leaders in the early Church ignored Jesus and Paul to gain control Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. See pcm.adswizz.com for information about our collection and use of personal data for advertising.

See pcm.adswizz.com for information about our collection and use of personal data for advertising.

Episode 19

Are We All In Christ?

For years I resisted the notion that Christ was in everyone, arguing that only those who made a decision for Christ and invited him into their hearts qualified for such a gift. But now, after many years of questions, debates and study, I've come to realize that - according to the New Testament - Christ truly is "all and in all." Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. See pcm.adswizz.com for information about our collection and use of personal data for advertising.

Episode 20

For God So Loved His Gay Sons And Daughters

By special request, this episode examines those "clobber passages" in the New Testament that are often used to condemn homosexuality. We'll talk about why Romans doesn't condemn being gay, why 1 Corinthians 6 has nothing to do with homosexuality, why the word was added to the Bible in 1946, and why Jesus affirms those who are "born that way." Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. See pcm.adswizz.com for information about our collection and use of personal data for advertising.

Episode 21

Sympathy For Paul

Many Christians struggle with a love/hate relationship when it comes to the Apostle Paul. They feel as if Paul fails to understand the Gospel that Jesus preached, or they reject Paul outright due to the anti-women, anti-gay passages in Paul's letters. But, what if Paul didn't say those things? What if some of the epistles weren't actually written by Paul but by those claiming to be Paul? Pour yourself a second cup and let's sit down and talk about Paul together. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. See pcm.adswizz.com for information about our collection and use of personal data for advertising.

When God Lets You Down

A popular worship song encourages us to raise our hands and sing along with the chorus - "You're never gonna let me down" - but the reality is that God will absolutely let you down. If it hasn't happened to you yet, it will. Listen to this episode to hear why it's important to admit that God often lets us down and why disappointment with God is par for the course. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. See pcm.adswizz.com for information about our collection and use of personal data for advertising.
