Beyond Biblical Manhood and Womanhood: Building a Post-Complementarian Church on the Word of God
Last updated on: August 16, 2018 at 2:21 pm By Guest Contributor
The following is a guest post by Jory Micah. She blogs about breaking the glass steeple at jorymicah.com. Well known complementarian John Piper has both egalitarians and complementarians scratching their heads in confusion. Piper is undoubtedly one of the most prominent theologians of our time, a “Goliath” if you will. I feel a bit like young David in the Old Testament taking him on, but surely if God can use David, He can use me. There is no doubt that most of us have... Read more

Divorcing Josh Duggar’s Monster God
Last updated on: August 16, 2018 at 2:21 pm By Zach Hoag
In the recent Ashley Madison hack, Josh Duggar was outed as having a paid account for seeking adulterous affairs. After the leak, he admitted to cheating on his wife, and to porn addiction. This, of course, came on the heels of the recent horrific revelations that he molested his sisters as a teen. And, perhaps not surprisingly, reports are now surfacing that Anna Duggar, Josh’s wife, will not consider divorcing him as an option. In fact, she may even be accepting some of the blame for his recent... Read more

HBO’s John Oliver takes televangelists and prosperity preachers to task – and it is PERFECT
Last updated on: August 16, 2018 at 2:21 pm By Zach Hoag
On Sunday night, John Stewart’s true heir apparent set his sights on the still-booming televangelist/prosperity gospel industry, digging up current footage of the uber-slimy Robert Tilton, and treating us to more mainstream hucksters like Kenneth and Gloria Copeland, Creflo Dollar, and Mike Murdoch – the latter of which may, by my reckoning, actually be the slimiest con-man of them all. In his characteristic style (with plenty of English fooking‘s), Oliver blows the lid off the IRS exemptions that cover phony churches... Read more

The Dones, Rob Bell, and the Future of Progressive (and Evangelical) Christianity
Last updated on: August 16, 2018 at 2:21 pm By Zach Hoag
A few days ago I wrote a piece on my personal blog about “Graduating.” It was partly a reflection on the story of Rob Bell and how it resonates with my own. It was also about the “Dones” and “post-church” category and how I identify not with the category itself, but with certain elements of the category even as I carve out my own path ahead. I am “done” – with evangelical church as usual. I’m done with any ministry obligation to that category... Read more

Planned Parenthood Is Not the Problem (At Least, Not Exactly)
Last updated on: August 16, 2018 at 2:21 pm By Zach Hoag
Planned Parenthood is not the problem. At least, not exactly. The problem is the cultural ideology that we’ve accepted as irrefutable gospel truth. The ideology that makes itself the arbiter of personhood, categorically dismissing the possibilities of pre-birth dignity. The ideology that celebrates (not just regrettably makes safe) the on-demand choice to end life. The ideology that these bodies, not yet born but obviously and truly human, have no inherent value. No value, that is, unless you are a research company... Read more

I Won’t Be Getting Patriotic This Weekend, But I Will Be Doing This
Last updated on: August 16, 2018 at 2:21 pm By Zach Hoag
If I could point to one moment, one watershed experience in my youth that single-handedly shaped my understanding of life, of politics, and most importantly, of rock and roll, it was when Neil Young and Pearl Jam performed “Keep On Rocking in the Free World” at the 1993 MTV Video Music Awards: First off, can you believe that actually happened at the MTV Video Music Awards? Something that authentic? Something that pure? I mean, MTV is now a horrendous conglomeration... Read more

Who’s Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf? Same-Sex Marriage and Blinding Evangelical Fear
Last updated on: August 16, 2018 at 2:21 pm By Zach Hoag
One thing we’ve all learned in the wake of the #SCOTUSmarriage decision last week is that many prominent evangelical voices trade in the currency of fear. Of course, that’s not what these voices would call it. They call it lamenting the “redefinition of marriage” and grieving over “institutionalizing suicidal commitments” (what). But regardless, the method is fear-mongering: leaping from the reality (that same-sex couples can now legally marry in every state) to an apocalyptic fantasy. That fantasy plays out in a variety...
