Eating Meat In Morrissey’s Honor

I’m grilling hamburgers tonight in honor of Morrissey’s comment. I don’t have a problem with people who choose not to eat meat. I do have a problem, however, with someone who uses the term “serial killers” to describe hunters, and by association, farmers, ranchers and all people associated with the meat-production industry. When Steven Patrick Morrissey backed out of performing on Jimmy Kimmel Live last night because the men of Duck Dynasty were slotted to be Kimmel’s guests, he said:

“As far as my reputation is concerned, I can’t take the risk being on a show alongside people who, in effect, amount to animal serial killers.”

I love our country precisely because we have freedom of speech, so I can appreciate that Morrissey has a right to voice his opinions. But, so do I…and so I’m typing as loudly as I can:

Way to go, Jimmy Kimmel. You made the right decision and kept the right people on your show last night. I saw the program…it was good stuff! Not to mention that farmers, ranchers, and sportsmen are helping feed the world…and your choice voiced support to these men and women who deserve better than the title “serial killers.”

When I was in college, a group of animal rights activists petitioned the school and convinced the cafeteria to not serve meat for one week. This was a small liberal arts school that drew many of its students from rural farming and ranching communities across Nebraska. These activists knew that they were making a qualitative statement about the lives and families of many of their classmates. When “Vegetarian Day” arrived, several students grilled steaks and burgers in protest. Nobody produces beef like Nebraska ranchers—so the feast was scrumptious that day. And it will be again tonight.

And, Jimmy Kimmel, if you’re reading this…you’re invited.
