The Tragic Death of Savita Halappanavar UPDATED

Last updated on: January 24, 2017 at 5:54 pm   By Frank Weathers

The news of the tragic passing of Savita Halappanavar is burning up the wires and stirring hate and discontent among folks both in Ireland and elsewhere. I suggest we pause and say a prayer for her and her family as they sort through their loss. This is not the time to be playing armchair surgeon, nor is it time to grab pitchforks and torches and come after the Catholic Church either. The Halappanavar family has enough grief to sort through without... Read more

Your Favorite Film Producer Is $5.00 Short…

Last updated on: May 23, 2016 at 8:43 pm   By Frank Weathers

What’s that? You forgot that I was your favorite film producer? Say it ain’t so, dear reader. Surely you remember how it has been a lifelong ambition of mine to sit in a chair like this one, and act all “big shot” important on the back lot of a film studio. (more…) Read more

Because “It’s like in the Great Stories, Mr. Frodo…”

Last updated on: June 7, 2015 at 11:35 pm   By Frank Weathers

Back in the beginning, all of the titles for posts answered the statement of the blog title,  “Why I Am Catholic.” And so it is again for this post, because our time here on earth is like the stories of old, only with a different cast of characters. And these days, dear reader, you are no longer a spectator as when you were a child, but you are a participant, willingly or no. (more…) Read more

Cardinal Dolan, “We’re not violating our consciences.”

Last updated on: January 24, 2017 at 5:54 pm   By Frank Weathers

Regarding the HHS Mandate, Rachel Zoll reports from Baltimore, A top American bishop said Tuesday the Roman Catholic church will not comply with the Obama administration requirement that most employers provide health insurance covering birth control. New York Cardinal Timothy Dolan, president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, said church leaders are open to working toward a resolution with federal officials, but will meanwhile press ahead with challenges to the mandate in legislatures and in court. “The only thing... Read more

For All the Saints: The Martyrs of Douai College

Last updated on: May 1, 2015 at 2:05 pm   By Frank Weathers

A few days back, we learned about the Bond family and their recusant Catholic past. Also a few days ago, CARA released survey results saying Catholics really want to learn more about the saints, and such. So let’s put it to the test with this post, shall we? Because this post has got it all, from daring do, to fidelity to the faith. Sainthood and martyrdom. It’s dangerous business being a Catholic.  Dangerous, that is, if your idea of being thought... Read more

Quote of the Week from Cardinal Dolan

Last updated on: January 22, 2015 at 1:01 pm   By Frank Weathers

The premier answer to the question “What’s wrong with the world?” “what’s wrong with the church?” is not politics, the economy, secularism, sectarianism, globalization or global warming . . .none of these, as significant as they are. As Chesterton wrote, “The answer to the question ‘What’s wrong with the world?’ is just two words:’I am.'” (more…) Read more

For His Majesty’s Secret Service: Agent Henry Morse, SJ

Last updated on: June 7, 2015 at 10:39 pm   By Frank Weathers

About a week ago, I reported that the world thought the Vatican got all starry-eyed about the latest James Bond film. Did you know that the Bond family were a line of recusant Catholics? Orbis non sufficit. Perhaps that is part of the reason why L’Osservatore Romano loved the film. Idea! How about a look at a nonfictional story of recusant Catholics? (more…) Read more
