Restoring the Watershed of Divine Love

Restoring the Watershed of Divine Love 2026-06-30T15:36:00-04:00 Heron Michelle

LOGO Patheos Explore the world's faith through different perspectives on religion and spirituality! Patheos has the views of the prevalent religions and spiritualities of the world.

One of the unexpected joys of spending years writing about witchcraft is that, every so often, the ideas begin connecting themselves in ways I never consciously intended. I don’t mean that I’ve suddenly “figured it all out.” If anything, the opposite is true. The more I study comparative religion, developmental psychology, ecology, cultural anthropology, Hermetic philosophy, neuroscience, and mythology, the less interested I become in proving that any one discipline possesses the whole truth. Each offers a lantern illuminating one small corner of an astonishingly vast landscape. What fascinates me now are the places where those lanterns begin illuminating the same terrain from different directions.

The IS-ness Venn Diagram by Heron Michelle

For years I’ve jokingly referred to this process as my “IS-ness Venn Diagram.” Imagine laying transparent sheets from completely different fields of human inquiry on top of one another. One circle represents Formal Sciences. Another, Natural Sciences. Another, the Social Sciences, and another Humanities. From those intersections we find our way into the deeper overlapping subjects of Quantum Mechanics, Magick, Spirituality and Art. Each discipline asks different questions, gathers different evidence, and uses its own language to describe reality. Yet somewhere in the center, there are curious places where their observations begin subtly agreeing with one another. Those overlapping places have become increasingly sacred to me because they suggest we may be glimpsing not a single tradition’s wisdom, but something more perennial: recurring patterns woven into reality itself.

Perhaps that has always been the promise hidden within the Hermetic Principle of Correspondence. “As above, so below; as within, so without,” is not merely an invitation to mystical thinking. It is an invitation to become a careful observer of patterns. If reality truly possesses an underlying coherence, then we should expect entirely different fields of study to stumble across echoes of one another from time to time. Psychology should occasionally rhyme with mythology. Ecology should unexpectedly illuminate spirituality. Cultural anthropology should offer insights into magickal practice. None of these disciplines become reducible to one another, yet they begin describing familiar rivers flowing through different landscapes.

Looking back over the 15 years I’ve spent writing and researching for my Pentacle Path books, I realize I thought I was building a system of modern witchcraft. Increasingly, however, I think I’ve actually been writing about initiation. Not initiation in the ceremonial sense, nor as a matter of degrees or secret knowledge, but initiation as a lifelong psychological movement of individuation from dependence toward sovereignty. The novice naturally looks outside themselves for identity, value, wisdom, security, and spiritual authority. That is simply where every child begins. Healthy parents, teachers, mentors, and elders temporarily hold those things for us until we are capable of carrying them ourselves.

Then, if all goes well, something remarkable begins happening: our sense of authority, security, and control over our lives gradually moves from sources outside of ourselves, to an internal source. Even spiritual authority itself slowly migrates from something borrowed into something inherent to our natural condition.

What part of yourself are you finally ready to stop outsourcing?

The Pentacle Path, I am beginning to suspect, is nothing less than the gradual process of reclaiming the parts of ourselves we have unconsciously outsourced, until identity, worth, wisdom, security, love, and spiritual authority arise from within and naturally flow back outward into the world. I smiled when that sentence first occurred to me because it sounded suspiciously like corporate management jargon. Yet the more I sat with it, the more profoundly true it became. Every path asks the same question in a different language: What part of yourself are you finally ready to stop outsourcing?

Every initiate answers that question differently. Some reclaim their voice. Others reclaim their bodies, or their intuition or creativity, their capacity to love, or their trust in the Divine. Whatever form it takes, initiation is always an act of remembrance rather than acquisition. It is less about becoming something new than uncovering what has patiently waited beneath the surface all along.

REAL STAAR – Nine Divine Love Conditions by Heron Michelle

REAL STAAR = Nine Divine Love Conditions

This realization also helped me more deeply understand the Nine Divine Love Conditions revealed to me by Aphrodite back in 2014. I now refer to those with the  mnemonic device: REAL STAAR. People occasionally ask whether Resources, Expression, Affection, Liberty, Security, Trustworthiness, Acceptance, Authenticity, and Reciprocity are commandments, virtues, or ethical “rules.” No. They are none of those things. They are descriptions of the ecological conditions under which divine love naturally circulates.

To my thinking, that is the most important distinction.

A forest does not flourish because someone commands it to become green. It flourishes because the watershed is healthy, the soil remains alive, the fungi quietly exchange nutrients beneath the surface, rainfall arrives in season, and countless relationships continue circulating life through the ecosystem. Remove enough of those conditions and the forest struggles. Restore them patiently, and something almost miraculous occurs: the forest remembers how to be a forest. Then *POOF* greenery happens, almost like “magick.”

I’m realizing that human civilization behaves much the same way.

Could a cooperative culture be an emergent property of healthy spiritual ecology?

Perhaps cooperation is not something we manufacture through legislation, ideology, or moral perfection. Could a cooperative culture be an emergent property of healthy spiritual ecology? Restore the conditions under which divine love naturally circulates, and communities begin remembering how to become communities. Families remember how to become families. Human beings remember how to become fully human.

Fear, however, interrupts circulation. When fear enters the chat, resources become hoarded, expression becomes silenced, affection shrinks into tribal loyalty, liberty becomes domination, trust dissolves, authenticity gives way to performance, and reciprocity slowly erodes into exploitation. We often describe the result as evil, yet I now recognize “evil” not as a supernatural force, but instead is an ecological failure—a blockage in the watershed of Divine Love itself. Like a river dammed until the water stagnates, or blood prevented from reaching living tissue, the suffering that follows may not be evidence that love has disappeared, but that its circulation has been interrupted.

Moral of the Story

Maybe this is why witchcraft has always felt less like escaping the world and more like tending to it as a healer, gardener, or like nature conservationist. The work is not to invite divinity, or conjure magickal energy, but to notice where the rivers of divine magick have stopped flowing. The deities, rituals, symbols, stories, and the seasons all seem to point us toward the same sacred labor: removing enough debris that magick remembers how to move freely again. If that is true, then initiation is more than the acquisition of occult knowledge and proficiency of our techniques. The process of initiation – becoming an adept, or priest/ess, or grand poobah-muckity-muck of occultism –  is the gradual restoration of the watershed of Divine Love within your own soul, until what has always been present within you is finally free to flow again.

“If that which you seek, you find not within thee, you will never find it without thee. For I am that which is attained at the end of desire.” ~ The Charge of the Goddess

Food for thought, yes? What do you think?
