After more than a decade of social media usage, the Facebook Memories function has come to serve me as a form of daily divination. It’s like receiving an echo of advice from myself through the ethers of time. Much like going back to read my diary entries, this function is an easy way to check in with the energetic tides of this day, reminisce about the good times, and learn from my mistakes. I find it fascinating to see how similar themes burble to the surface this same day every year. Conversely, it is fascinating to see the wild variety of life experiences the same day can bring.

Because March 5th is two days before my birthday, I’m reminded of parties and treats from friends. But there is also that year I got a speeding ticket on the way to work. Of course, every year I comment how much I hate doing the tax-prep accounting! The following are some wisdom-nuggets I’ve mined from March 5th throughout the years. Perhaps something here will inspire or entertain you today.

March 5, 2012: Tuition Payments to the School of Learning it the Hard Way

“Owning a brick and mortar business like mine (The Sojourner Whole Earth Provisions) is ridiculously complicated and expensive. It is a good thing that entrepreneurs usually have no idea what they are getting themselves into or else no one would ever open a business. I have paid so many tuition payments to the school of ‘learning it the hard way.’ To my young friends: If you think you will EVER wish to own/manage a business–no matter what kind it is–get the degree in business and take accounting classes. Then prepare to live in the back-room of your location.”

I’ve been interviewed by two students of an entrepreneur class this semester, and emphasized this point to them both.

March 5, 2013: Wonderment is Power

“They say that ‘knowledge is power.’ While I agree to a certain degree, I would challenge that by saying that true empowerment comes from WONDER. The power to wonder is to release knowing. To know something too rigidly will cut you off from possibility, from new information, new insight, from change itself. It is the power of the OPEN mind. You show me any genius who revolutionized the world as they knew it and I bet we’d find that they’re greatest strength was the ability to WONDER why, how and how better.”

I first discovered this concept in the Wiccan books by author Timothy Roderick. These ideas came to be featured in my new book called Elemental Witchcraft, set to be released on December 8th, 2021!

March 3, 2013: Shallowness of the Virtual Relationship

“Interesting how in this time, with ability to interconnect and communicate with people is at an unprecedented high, that our ability to feel disconnected and desperately alone is also weirdly high. I wonder if the shallowness of the virtual relationship is somehow more damaging than no relationships at all? Deep thoughts on a Tuesday…”

After 2020 shutting us all down, leaving only the virtual connections, I believe this more than ever. I would rather just wait to see anyone in person, than ever have a video conference or zoom hang-out again.

March 5, 2014: Transcendence Isn’t Easy

“No one said that it would be easy to live a well-examined, thoroughly-activated life. If transcending beyond a petty, paranoid, fearful, hateful state of mind were easy, surely more people would do it.”

I’m still marveling at the magnitude of “witches” still spewing their petty poison into the community well, while claiming to be an advanced magickal practitioner. They provide so much evidence to the contrary, y’all.

March 5, 2015: Nothing says love quite like a sheet cake

Remember when we would pack into crowded rooms with naked faces, and ritually blow our hot, wet breath all over a cake? And our friends would line up to eat our germ-soaked confections ? Yeah…the good ol’ days? Thanks to my coven-mate, Eclipse, for that 41st birthday I felt so appreciated because he thoughtfully brought a sheet-cake to our Thursday night Witchcraft class. We quickly scavenged a yellow tea-light candle for some quick wishing magick.

March 5, 2019: Mothering Woe

In 2019, my daughter was 17 and none too happy with me. I shared a meme with this quote: “By the time you realize your mother was right, you have a daughter who thinks you are wrong.” ~ Sada Malhotra

I wish I could remember what I realized my mom was actually right about… Probably just that adult life is complicated, and we’re all human, subject to human failings, and struggling to survive within a system rigged against the average person. Some days there are only impossible choices and disappointment for somebody is inevitable. Sadly, until your brain finally finishes developing around age 25 there is little hope of a kid being able to grasp these complexities. Alas, the cycle of parenting woe is doomed to continue…

March 5, 2020: Carl Jung?

“Imma need the entire collected works of Carl Jung. Stat. Time to hit up the library.”

I was researching for the Elemental Witchcraft book manuscript at the time. Lo and behold, after that post my friend Edward dropped off his collection of Carl Jung works for me to borrow, which was awesome! Also timely, because the public library closed due to the COVID-19 shelter in place order by that next Friday, March 13th. Goes to show that “ask and ye shall receive” doesn’t just work for the bible-readers.
