Faerieworlds Update + Pagan News Links

Last updated on: July 28, 2012 at 11:27 am   By Jason Pitzl-Waters

At past Faerieworlds, Friday is usually seen as the least busy of the three-day event. People have to work, it’s a shorter day, and many are still arriving. However, this year seemed far, far, larger, and the energy level was high, making me think that we’ll see record-breaking attendances on Saturday and Sunday. Like all opening Fridays at Faerieworlds, it started with a ceremony/ritual led by Emilio and Kelly from Woodland, with help from S.J. Tucker. They did a Lammas... Read more

Entering the Faerie Realm, Leaving Transformed

Last updated on: July 26, 2012 at 11:27 pm   By Jason Pitzl-Waters

Today marks the beginning of Faerieworlds, a three-day arts and music festival in Eugene, Oregon that embraces the mythic and the fantastic in ways that many of us in the Pagan community would find familiar. A transformational space where each of us is encouraged to embrace the numinous in our own way, our own context. A chance to “live our legend.” As I said last year, this event taps into a blossoming re-enchantment of the world, one that is very... Read more

Why We Should Reject the Demonic Possession Narrative

Last updated on: July 26, 2012 at 12:39 pm   By Jason Pitzl-Waters

Over in the Catholic section of Patheos, Fr. Dwight Longenecker explores the idea that James Holmes, responsible for 12 deaths in the Aurora, Colorado movie theater shooting that happened last week, may have been demonically possessed. According to Longenecker, “demonic infestation is a rare, strange and terrible psycho-spiritual affliction” that “maybe” afflicted Holmes. “What makes a mild mannered, promising young scientist decide to arm himself to the teeth, walk into a suburban movie theater and start killing innocent people at random?” What a... Read more

I Have No Plans to Kidnap Your Man

Last updated on: July 25, 2012 at 11:38 am   By Jason Pitzl-Waters

The Epping Forest Guardian reports that someone has been stuffing leaflets in local homes accusing Pagans of  wanting “to abduct a male member of the public for use as part of their rituals” this Lammas. Pagan Federation representative Mani Navasothy is not amused by this local smear campaign.  “That’s just ridiculous. Nobody is going to catch a man and abduct him. I have got a degree in physics, so I’m not an idiot. Practising Pagans just don’t do that sort of thing. I... Read more

Pagan Community Notes: New Alexandrian Library’s Foundation, A Circle Minister’s Protest, A Sierra Club Interview, and More!

Last updated on: July 24, 2012 at 2:09 pm   By Jason Pitzl-Waters

Pagan Community Notes is a series focused on news originating from within the Pagan community. Reinforcing the idea that what happens to and within our organizations, groups, and events is news, and news-worthy. My hope is that more individuals, especially those working within Pagan organizations, get into the habit of sharing their news with the world. So let’s get started! Pagan News of Note: Update on Vodou in Haiti, Maxine Sanders Interview, and More!

Last updated on: July 23, 2012 at 11:41 am   By Jason Pitzl-Waters

Welcome to the working week! I hope you’re all having as good a Monday as possible. Let’s start off with an important update on a previously reported story, and then move on to some Pagan news of note. Haitian Government Reassures Vodouisants in Wake of Constitutional Changes: Last week I reported on the newly-amended Haitian constitution, and an assertion from Euvonie Auguste, head of the National Confederation of Haitian Vodou (KNVA), that it removes legal protections for Vodou practitioners. “Voodoo would be no longer... Read more

Quote(s) of the Day: Benh Zeitlin, Zola Jesus, and Eric Gibson

Last updated on: July 22, 2012 at 11:23 am   By Jason Pitzl-Waters

Just a few selected quotes to start off your day. httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZF7i2n5NXLo “Mythology and folklore have become this thing that is sort of archaic, like the “old” stories. But good movies are constantly updating these classic stories and these classic scenarios. Our idea of what a hero is and what a hero does is an important barometer for where the world is and where our culture is. When you watch how Western heroes evolve over the period when Westerns were really... Read more

Unleash the Hounds! (Link Roundup)

Last updated on: July 21, 2012 at 1:01 pm   By Jason Pitzl-Waters

There are lots of articles and essays of interest to modern Pagans out there, sometimes more than I can write about in-depth in any given week. So The Wild Hunt must unleash the hounds in order to round them all up. I’d like to start by saying that my thoughts and prayers go out to those injured, and the families of those killed, in a senseless theater murder-spree that occurred in Aurora, Colorado on July 20th at a Midnight premiere of The Dark Knight Rises. I’d like to... Read more

Obama, Romney, and Rick Warren’s Religious Test

Last updated on: July 21, 2012 at 10:34 am   By Jason Pitzl-Waters

Saddleback Church’s evangelical mega-pastor Rick Warren has announced that he’ll be holding another presidential forum, just as he famously did in 2008 with Barack Obama and John McCain. While nothing is confirmed yet, it is tentatively scheduled for the end of August and will supposedly work “to promote social civility so that people with major disagreements (can) talk without beating each other up.” However, neither President Obama nor Republican challenger Mitt Romney should be fooled, this is an exercise in... Read more
