Unleash the Hounds! (Link Roundup)

Last updated on: August 28, 2011 at 11:20 am   By Jason Pitzl-Waters

There are lots of articles and essays of interest to modern Pagans out there, sometimes more than I can write about in-depth in any given week. So The Wild Hunt must unleash the hounds in order to round them all up. First off, I hope all my readers, friends, and supporters out on the East Coast, and in the path of Hurricane Irene, are safe and have taken proper precautions. Though the storm is less intense than first expected, there’s still plenty of damage... Read more

The Fight For Christian Prayers at Non-Christian Veteran Burial Services

Last updated on: August 27, 2011 at 1:13 pm   By Jason Pitzl-Waters

For those who have attended a military funeral in the United States, or even watched one on television, you know there’s certain traditional ceremonial actions taken. The folding and presentation of the flag, the firing of a 3-volley salute, and the playing of Taps are all standard. In addition to these standard elements, there are several volunteer support and advocacy groups who often provide additional services to the family of the bereaved. Three of those organizations, The National Memorial Ladies, The American Legion, and the... Read more

Paganism and the Decline of “Religion”

Last updated on: August 26, 2011 at 10:25 am   By Jason Pitzl-Waters

Back in March the BBC reported on a study that predicted the extinction of religion in nine countries: Australia, Austria, Canada, the Czech Republic, Finland, Ireland, the Netherlands, New Zealand and Switzerland. The mathematical model used to make this prediction is very similar to one used to predict the extinction of languages. The idea is simple: as the population of religiously non-affiliated individuals grow, their preferences start to become attractive to more and more people. “The idea is pretty simple,” said... Read more

Quick Notes: NAR on Fresh Air, Tribal Recognition, and an Iowa Daycare goes Christian

Last updated on: August 25, 2011 at 11:25 am   By Jason Pitzl-Waters

Just a few quick news notes for you on this Thursday. NAR on Fresh Air: I’ve written at some length on the Christian movement known as the New Apostolic Reformation (NAR), a group that’s been getting increased media scrutiny lately due to their proximity to presidential candidates like Texas governor Rick Perry. However, as the recent blowback over the term “Dominionist” proves, there’s quite a bit people don’t know about this increasingly connected religio-political network of apostles and prophets. A key... Read more

Stonehenge Remains, Maetreum of Cybele, and other Pagan News of Note

Last updated on: August 24, 2011 at 10:51 am   By Jason Pitzl-Waters

King Arthur vs. Archeology: British Druid leader King Arthur Pendragon (no, not that Arthur Pendragon) has failed in his attempt to force reburial of human remains found at Stonehenge, claiming the 5000-year-old cremated remains were of a royal “priest caste,” potential founding fathers of Britain. “Mr Justice Wyn Williams refused to give King Arthur permission to launch a judicial review action – ruling at a High Court hearing in London that there was insufficient evidence to show that the Ministry of Justice might... Read more

Just Because You’re Paranoid, Don’t Mean They’re Not After You

Last updated on: August 23, 2011 at 12:35 am   By Jason Pitzl-Waters

Forgive the nod to Nirvana, whose “Nevermind” is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, but I’ve been reading an awful lot lately about accusations of paranoia regarding coverage of the Christian religious phenomenon known as Dominionism. For some reason Kurt Cobain sneering “just because you’re paranoid, don’t mean they’re not after you” kept entering my mind. Maybe it’s a generational thing. httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UWgtTxvTUDA In any case, ever since the presidential candidacies of Rep. Michele Bachmann and Texas governor Rick Perry started making... Read more

Paganism: Arts, Ads, and Aesthetics

Last updated on: August 22, 2011 at 10:43 am   By Jason Pitzl-Waters

Today I’m going to take a break from my inevitable contribution to the ongoing debate about Christian Dominionism, and instead look at some arts and design-related news that might be of interest. Dionysus is The Blood: First off, filmmaker Brielle Simone Greenberg’s paeon to the god Dionysus has been making the rounds of the Pagan ‘net. Sannion at The House of Vines says that “this short film comes closer to depicting the god I worship than anything I’ve ever seen before.” httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z98m4w5IU_U “The... Read more

COG Grand Council Elects New First Officer, Meets at MerryMeet

Last updated on: August 20, 2011 at 11:27 pm   By Jason Pitzl-Waters

This weekend Covenant of The Goddess, one of the largest and oldest Witch and Wiccan associations, held their 2011 Grand Council. This year the council, part of the larger yearly event known as MerryMeet, took place in Irving Texas and was hosted by the Texas Local Council (click here to download an audio interview with Chuck Peart of COG’s Texas Local Council). In a historic first for this national Witchcraft organization, their traditional opening invocation featured an interfaith blessing with Tatiana Androsov, Russian Orthodox, of... Read more

Unleash the Hounds! (Link Roundup)

Last updated on: August 20, 2011 at 10:46 am   By Jason Pitzl-Waters

There are lots of articles and essays of interest to modern Pagans out there, sometimes more than I can write about in-depth in any given week. So The Wild Hunt must unleash the hounds in order to round them all up. A barbershop in Massachusetts has been closed down after city inspectors found a Palo Mayombe altar and six chickens (one dead) in the basement of the establishment. Health officials have shut down the business due to unsanitary conditions in the basement. The owner claims... Read more

Update: West Memphis 3 Are Free

Last updated on: August 19, 2011 at 4:46 pm   By Jason Pitzl-Waters

As speculated this morning, the West Memphis 3 have been released from prison in an Alford plea that allows them to be released maintaining their innocence, while still being considered guilty by the state of Arkansas. Here’s an official statement from Damien Echols on his release: “To all my friends and family, my attorneys and advocates, and to those of you from every corner of this earth who have stood beside us these long years, please know that I will... Read more
