Quick Note: Pagans in the Air Force Story

Last updated on: November 28, 2011 at 9:44 am   By Jason Pitzl-Waters

In yesterday’s link roundup I mentioned that the LA Times did a feature on Pagans in the Air Force Academy, I thought it was merely OK, but it turns out that the piece had been edited from a far more mocking tone according to Star Foster at Patheos. “Because I’m an idiot, I didn’t take a screenshot of the article, which has now been edited for tone. (I will always take screenshots going forward, just in case.) Her previously snarky... Read more

Unleash the Hounds! (Link Roundup)

Last updated on: November 27, 2011 at 11:38 am   By Jason Pitzl-Waters

There are lots of articles and essays of interest to modern Pagans out there, sometimes more than I can write about in-depth in any given week. So The Wild Hunt must unleash the hounds in order to round them all up. The New York Times does a profile of Lady Rhea, “the Witch Queen of New York.” The article focuses on how Lady Rhea doesn’t fit the profile of the fantasy witch, noting that she is “no cartoon witch. She is a no-nonsense Bronx... Read more

What Does Canada’s Polygamy Decision Mean for Polyamorous Pagans?

Last updated on: November 26, 2011 at 9:22 am   By Jason Pitzl-Waters

On Wednesday the Supreme Court of British Columbia upheld Canada’s law banning the practice of polygamy (multiple-partner marriages). This legal battle was somewhat unique in that a legal alliance of fundamentalist Mormons and a polyamory advocacy group (the CPAA) stood together to challenge the law. In addition, Pagan families and clergy in Canada have filed affidavits of support in the decriminalization case there. The reason for this somewhat unlikely fellowship was made clear during the trial when the B.C. Attorney General’s office made very clear that polyamorous... Read more

Pagan Community Notes: Peter Dybing, Solar Cross, New Alexandrian Library, and more!

Last updated on: November 25, 2011 at 10:06 am   By Jason Pitzl-Waters

Pagan Community Notes is a companion to my usual Pagan News of Note series, more focused on news originating from within the Pagan community. I want to reinforce the idea that what happens to and within our organizations, groups, and events is news, and news-worthy. My hope is that more individuals, especially those working within Pagan organizations, get into the habit of sharing their news with the world. So lets get started! Peter Dybing at Occupy Fort Lauderdale: Pagan activist, leader, and first responder... Read more

Happy Thanksgiving

Last updated on: November 24, 2011 at 9:11 am   By Jason Pitzl-Waters

Whether this is a day of thanksgiving or mourning (or even “unthanksgiving”) for you and yours, may you find contentment, happiness, and peace. The Wild Hunt will be taking the rest of the day off to cook and spend time with loved ones. I’d like to give thanks to everyone who reads, comments, and supports this blog. All of you give me something to be thankful for. Regular posting will resume tomorrow.   Read more

Updates: James Arthur Ray, Pope Benedict XVI, and Haiti’s Vodou Tourism

Last updated on: November 23, 2011 at 7:01 am   By Jason Pitzl-Waters

News did not grind to a halt while I was away at the AAR Annual Meeting, and I have a few important updates on previously reported stories here at The Wild Hunt that I’d like to share with you before I continue unpacking my AAR coverage. James Arthur Ray Sentenced: Perhaps the biggest news to break while I was away is that New Age guru James Arthur Ray, who was convicted in June of negligent homicide in the deaths of three... Read more

AAR: Coming Home

Last updated on: November 22, 2011 at 9:08 am   By Jason Pitzl-Waters

It’s Tuesday morning and I’m at the San Francisco International airport awaiting my flight back to Oregon. There’s so much I have to report on and write about concerning the American Academy of Religion’s Annual Meeting but it will have to wait until I’m back at my own desk with hours of uninterrupted writing time ahead of me. But rest assured, there’s a lot to come, and many projects that are now gestating due to this meeting.  In the meantime,... Read more

AAR Day 2: Starhawk on Elemental Theology

Last updated on: November 21, 2011 at 9:39 am   By Jason Pitzl-Waters

I have a lot to report on from Sunday’s presentations and panels at the American Academy of Religion’s Annual Meeting, including issues of indigenous-Pagan relations and the development of modern Paganism on the West Coast, but I’d like to devote this post to the opening panel co-presented by the Contemporary Pagan Studies Group and the Religion and Ecology Group. The panel, “Elemental Theology and Feminist Earth Practices,” featured dual keynote talks from noted Catholic eco-feminist theologian Rosemary R. Ruether (author... Read more

AAR Day One: Western Esotericism, Extremism, and COG Hospitality

Last updated on: November 20, 2011 at 12:50 pm   By Jason Pitzl-Waters

One thing is certain, the American Academy of Religion’s Annual Meeting is overwhelming in its scope and it’s easy to get lost among the hundreds of panels, discussions, and lectures on offer each day. On Saturday I was lucky to attend two very thought-provoking panel presentations that should be of interest to Pagan and esoteric practitioners. The first was a sprawling forum entitled: “Demons In The Academy? Renouncing Rejected Knowledge, Again.” The panel centered on the study of Western Esotericism,... Read more

Officers of Avalon Responds to Police Violence in Occupy Movement

Last updated on: November 19, 2011 at 12:15 pm   By Star Foster

Peter Dybing and Officers of Avalon have responded to police violence in the Occupy Movement: Over the past several days the membership of Officers of Avalon has become highly concerned with both the images of police actions at Occupy sites and the discussion within the Pagan community about these events. This leaves the organization in the precarious situation of having to find a way to support freedom of expression, arguably a Pagan value, and also support our fellow officers. For... Read more
