Debunking the Cost of the Air Force Academy’s Falcon Circle (Again)

Last updated on: March 31, 2012 at 10:45 am   By Jason Pitzl-Waters

There’s no rhetorical fruit that hangs lower than government waste, everyone hates it! $16 dollar muffins, $600 dollar toilet seats, $131,000 dollar dragon robots for preschoolers (actually, that sounds pretty cool), all seeming evidence of a spend-happy government run amok, and an easy target for curmudgeonly columnists of all political stripes. This past year, we saw modern Pagans get sucked into this Andy Rooney-esque vortex from which no nuance or joy escapes when a LA Times report wrote about the Air Force... Read more

Quick Notes: Christopher Vaughn’s Druid Beliefs, John Friend’s Scandal, and the Occult Crimes Taskforce

Last updated on: March 30, 2012 at 6:53 pm   By Jason Pitzl-Waters

Just a few quick news notes for you today. Lawyers May Not Mention Druid Beliefs in Vaughn Murder Trial: Earlier this week I mentioned that lawyers for Christopher Vaughn, accused of murdering his wife and three children, were trying to block any mention of his Druid religion from court proceedings.  Public Defender Jaya Varghese said that “The word ‘Druid’ alone is prejudicial,” and would “significantly impact” his right to a fair trial. Today, Judge Daniel Rozak ruled that Vaughn’s Druid beliefs may not be mentioned... Read more

Sexual Assault, Wicca, and Consent

Last updated on: March 29, 2012 at 10:13 am   By Jason Pitzl-Waters

Local media in Ohio are reporting on the arrest of Daniel Hess and live-in girlfriend Lacey Day for the sexual assault of a 15-year-old family member. NBC affiliate WTAP noted that Hess and Day admitted to the sexual acts, and that according to police deputies the victim seemed to be there willingly. Hess allegedly told police that the sexual acts were part of the Wiccan faith. “We’ve been conducting the investigation for about the last two weeks. It came to our... Read more

“Religious Freedom” Laws, Inspirational Messages, and Religious Minorities

Last updated on: March 28, 2012 at 11:27 am   By Jason Pitzl-Waters

The idea of the United States as a pluralistic, secular, society where no single religious expression is enshrined has always gotten push-back, and experienced robust dissent over the years. To many, America is a “Christian” nation (sometimes a “Judeo-Christian” nation), and all others live here under their sufferance. The Rev. Dennis Terry’s recent comments at a Rick Santorum presidential rally typify the more vituperative side of this particular sentiment. httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B2emBxDOY7g “I don’t care what the naysayers say. Last updated on: March 27, 2012 at 12:26 pm   By Jason Pitzl-Waters

Welcome to the latest installment of Unleash the Hounds, in which I round up articles and essays of interest to modern Pagans. Before we get started I wanted to give an update on the Pagan journalism crowdfunding experiment I launched on March 21st. The very excellent news is that not only have I reached my fundraising goal of $1850 dollars to send The Wild Hunt to Chicago in November so that I can cover the American Academy of Religion’s 2012 Annual Meeting, but I’ve surpassed... Read more

Dan Halloran to Run for Congress, How Will Religion Impact the Race?

Last updated on: March 26, 2012 at 10:33 am   By Jason Pitzl-Waters

There had been rumblings for several days, and yesterday it was confirmed, that Republican New York City Councilman Dan Halloran will run for the newly created Sixth Congressional District. On Sunday, Halloran received the endorsement of the Queens County Republican Party, who called him “a proven vote getter and a strong voice for taxpayers, small businesses and seniors.” Halloran responded by saying that “it is time for politics to go for non-entrenched people,” and “we don’t need career politicians in Washington carving... Read more

World of Witches Museum in Salem Closes its Doors

Last updated on: March 25, 2012 at 10:56 am   By Jason Pitzl-Waters

Last weekend saw the World of Witches Museum in Salem, Massachusetts permanently close its doors. Opened in the Summer of 2010, the museum represented “a coming of age for the Witch movement, which allows us to recognize that we do have a history worthy of sharing” according to Rev. Don Lewis, Curator of the Museum, and chief executive officer of the Correllian Nativist Tradition. However, due to a string of  misfortunes, staying open was no longer a viable option. In a statement sent to... Read more

Pagan Chaplain Patrick McCollum on the Pew Forum Religion in Prisons Survey

Last updated on: March 24, 2012 at 10:16 am   By Jason Pitzl-Waters

[Yesterday, I posted some initial analysis and reaction to the new Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life’s 50-state survey of prison chaplains. Today, I’d like to share with you the thoughts of Patrick McCollum. Patrick has been working as a Pagan chaplain and activist for well over twenty years. He was one of the founding members of the Lady Liberty League, and has been involved in numerous legal struggles involving modern Pagans. In 2008, he testified before the US Commission on Civil Rights on prisoner’s religious rights, saying he “found... Read more

What the New Pew Forum Survey Tells Us About Pagan Religions in U.S. Prisons

Last updated on: March 23, 2012 at 12:08 am   By Jason Pitzl-Waters

Yesterday the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life released the findings of a 50-state survey of prison chaplains.  The survey, which was endorsed by the American Correctional Chaplains Association, interviewed 730 prison chaplains, and has a lot of interesting things to say about religion in the American prison system. At first glance, there are no major bombshell revelations to drive the news cycle, leading to initial headlines like “a lot of religion goes on behind bars.” However, if you start... Read more
