Richard Land and “Full-Blown Paganism”
Last updated on: May 30, 2012 at 11:30 am By Jason Pitzl-Waters
Richard Land is president of the Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission (ERLC), an arm of the Southern Baptist Convention, the second-largest Christian body in the United States. Land is a prominent American Christian who has authored several books, and made many mainstream media appearances. Land, supposedly the top ethicist for the SBC, was recently embroiled in a plagiarism scandal, but that’s another story. Since this is The Wild Hunt, we’re going to talk about Paganism, something that was very much on minds of... Read more

Updates: Winnemem Wintu, U.S. Religion Census, Dan Halloran
Last updated on: May 29, 2012 at 10:39 am By Jason Pitzl-Waters
Welcome back! I hope you enjoyed your Memorial Day weekend. Here are a few updates on previously reported stories to ease you back into the work week. Winnemem Wintu War Dance: This past weekend, as I reported here previously, the Winnemem Wintu tribe blocked off a 400-yard stretch of the McCloud River, an area central to their coming of age ceremonies. The reason for the blockade is due to the Forest Service’s ongoing refusal to grant mandatory closures for these ceremonies, resulting in teenage girls... Read more

Honoring Our Pagan Fallen on Memorial Day
Last updated on: May 27, 2012 at 9:01 pm By Jason Pitzl-Waters
In America, today is Memorial Day, a federal holiday that recognizes those who have died in the service of our military forces. For decades modern Pagan military personnel have worked to see that their contributions and sacrifices were given equal honor and recognition. Today, Pagan involvement in our armed forces is at a level of visibility and acceptance never before imagined, though with that recognition comes new challenges. While we work to continue our advances, let’s take a moment to recognize the fallen. Circle Sanctuary is... Read more

Quick Notes: Hindu Education, Pagan Alliance Festival, A Polytheist’s View of Christianity
Last updated on: May 27, 2012 at 11:45 am By Jason Pitzl-Waters
Just a few quick news notes for you this Sunday. A Hindu Education: While there are a growing number of Hindu temples and house of worship in the United States, it can still be hard for American Hindus to find a place to practice their religion. Even more frustrating is when there is a local temple, but its teachings don’t line up with your own beliefs. Religion News Service reports on how some Hindus are getting together to provide religious... Read more

The Strange Idea that Religion Evolved Towards Christianity
Last updated on: May 26, 2012 at 3:49 pm By Jason Pitzl-Waters
I tend to ignore Camp Catholic here at Patheos, and I daresay most of them are inclined to overlook that fact that this site is brimming with unapologetic capital-P, multiple-gods-worshiping, Pagans. Despite the fact that Catholics got most of their best bits from pre-Christian religion and culture, we tend to have a relationship that is less than cordial. In any case, I’m a live-and-let-live sort of guy, a peaceful polytheist content to serve my own community as best I can.... Read more

Unleash the Hounds! (Link Roundup)
Last updated on: May 25, 2012 at 11:19 am By Jason Pitzl-Waters
There are lots of articles and essays of interest to modern Pagans out there, sometimes more than I can write about in-depth in any given week. So The Wild Hunt must unleash the hounds in order to round them all up. Today is World Tarot Day, “a celebration of the spirit of Tarot,” which includes the world’s largest Tarot reading, and other related events held across the world. Here’s a press release concerning the event. Here’s a quote from scholar and mystic A.E. Waite... Read more

Pagans and Jesus
Last updated on: May 24, 2012 at 12:00 pm By Jason Pitzl-Waters
I’m in the process of reading two very different books about modern Pagans, and how they encounter Jesus, the central (and salvic) figure in Christian religion. The nature of the dialog found in these works point to the centrality and cultural power Christianity possesses, despite claims that this dominant monotheism is endangered in any meaningful way. Perhaps there are works underway about how Christians encounter Dionysis, or how best to explain Hekate to Jesus-followers, and I just haven’t heard about them yet?... Read more

Winnemem Wintu Tribe Plan Civil Disobedience
Last updated on: May 23, 2012 at 11:08 am By Jason Pitzl-Waters
Starting this Thursday, and running through the weekend, the Winnemem Wintu tribe in Northern California are holding a War Dance of civil disobedience, blocking off a 400-yard stretch of the McCloud River, an area central to their coming of age ceremonies. The reason for the blockade is due to the Forest Service’s refusal to grant mandatory closures for these ceremonies, resulting in teenage girls being heckled and abused by boating tourists. httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aoNmslmbhU8 “Help our tribe’s peaceful ceremony of resistance, our... Halloran Opens the Religion “Black Box”
Last updated on: May 21, 2012 at 11:12 am By Jason Pitzl-Waters
Ever since his religious affiliation was outed to the general public back in 2009, Republican Dan Halloran has tried to keep the subject off his adherence to Theodish Heathenism, and on day-to-day political matters. After his Heathen faith became an issue in the successful 2009 campaign for a seat on the New York City Council, he finally released a public statement entitled “I believe in God,” which downplayed his Pagan identity, and stressed Halloran’s Catholic heritage. “I took comfort in...
