Hindus and Charity
Last updated on: December 9, 2015 at 1:29 pm By Ambaa Choate
Editors’ Note: This article is part of the Patheos Public Square on Charitable Giving. Read other perspectives here. For December Patheos has asked us bloggers to write about charitable giving and why we do it. They say this is the time of year for gifts and giving. There aren’t really gift-giving holidays in December for Hindus but charity is something for all year round and it’s always a good time to talk about giving. Just as some people in America see... On Medication
Last updated on: December 7, 2015 at 8:00 pm By Ambaa Choate
I’m feeling a lot better than I was last week. Not 100% but a lot better. I went to see my midwife and I was a total wreck. She prescribed me Zoloft, which is thought to be safer in pregnancy than a depressed mother-to-be. Though it takes a few weeks to build up to its full effect, I actually started feeling better after about three days. It was hard to tell exactly. I couldn’t see what was different, yet my... Quick update
Last updated on: December 3, 2015 at 9:17 am By Ambaa Choate
Just wanted to let everyone know that I’m doing okay. Still not feeling good but I got a prescription for Zoloft and I’m giving that a try. My local friends have been coming by and keeping me from getting isolated. I’m hopeful that I’ll feel back to myself soon. I want you to know that as down as I feel I am not in any danger. I would never harm myself (particularly knowing that I would just reincarnate and face... Read more

Antenatal Depression
Last updated on: December 2, 2015 at 9:00 am By Ambaa Choate
Many of you know that I’ve struggled with depression in the past (see my post on Hinduism and Depression). I thought that it was resolved and mostly behind me, that I could effectively deal with any little flareups. But within weeks of becoming pregnant it was back in full force. This feels deeply unfair. I’m finally getting everything that I wanted in life, the baby that I worked so hard for, and I can’t enjoy it. Depression is in no... Read more

Where To Find Me On The Web
Last updated on: November 30, 2015 at 2:33 pm By Ambaa Choate
I thought it would be nice to gather my usernames on various social media sites and get them all in one place! In case you want to follow me elsewhere and maybe see other little tidbits and aspects of my life… YouTube My YouTube channel is here. I post videos occasionally, but I’m planning to do a bunch more. My husband and I are starting a video series where we playfully debate with each other on various philosophical issues. I’d like... Read more

The Truth About Gender
Last updated on: November 23, 2015 at 7:23 am By Ambaa Choate
When I was a teenager I wrote some articles for an anti-feminist website. Now, many years later, I consider myself a feminist. Because I learned that it means believing that women are human beings and people have equal rights. Women don’t need to have advantages over men just as men don’t need to have advantages over women. We can all co-exist as equals. There is a trap that a lot of people fall into of thinking that how they experience... Read more

Making Connections
Last updated on: November 23, 2015 at 6:57 am By Ambaa Choate
This past weekend I was at a conference in Massachusetts. One of the talks that I went to was about cultural misappropriation, which is always a good topic for me to engage with. There wasn’t a lot of new information for me, but it was good to talk about it with new people and get new perspectives. One thing the moderator brought up was the idea that if you are taking something from traditions that aren’t yours (or your ancestors’)... Read more

Scripture Study: Bhagavad Gita, book three verses 13-15
Last updated on: November 23, 2015 at 5:29 pm By Ambaa Choate
We are doing a scripture study together: reading along through some scriptures and discussing the passages. From the Winthrop Sargeant translation of The Gita… 13. The good, who eat the remainder of the sacrifice, Are released from all evils, But the wicked, who cook only for their own sake, Eat their own impurity. 14. Beings exist from food, Food is brought into being by the rain God, The rain God is cherished through sacrifice, Sacrifice is brought into being by action.... Read more

My Diwali 2015
Last updated on: November 18, 2015 at 10:14 am By Ambaa Choate
What a week it has been! Super busy. Brad had a birthday party on Saturday and then I had an eight hour work shift on Sunday. Monday I had an appointment with the midwife, which meant dropping Brad off at work early in the morning and driving about thirty minutes. I find that pretty exhausting so I was beat for the rest of the day. Then Tuesday I got a surprise work day. I had thought I was working Wednesday... Read more
