Scripture Study: Bhagavad Gita (book three, verses 20-24)
Last updated on: February 13, 2017 at 6:16 pm By Ambaa Choate
We are doing a scripture study together: reading along through some scriptures and discussing the passages. Here are all of the posts on the previous verses for the Gita: Bhagavad Gita Study From the Winthrop Sargeant translation of The Gita… 20. Perfection was attained by kings like Janaka With action alone. For the mere maintenance of the world, You should act. 21.Whatever the greatest man does, Thus do the rest; Whatever standard he sets, The world follows that. 22. For Me,... Read more

Worship of the Divine Mother
Last updated on: December 14, 2017 at 11:48 am By Ambaa Choate
The world right now could use some feminine energy, I think. The comfort and safety of a mother’s arms. The knowledge that she will protect you through any crisis. Here are a couple of ways that you can connect with the Divine Mother and the healing power of feminine energy… The Shakti Coloring Book I was sent this book to review. I’ve been kind of skeptical about the adult coloring book craze. I did love coloring as a kid but... Read more

Scripture Study: Bhagavad Gita, book three verses 16-19
Last updated on: February 8, 2017 at 12:38 pm By Ambaa Choate
We are doing a scripture study together: reading along through some scriptures and discussing the passages. Here are all of the posts on the previous verses for the Gita: Bhagavad Gita Study From the Winthrop Sargeant translation of The Gita… 16. He who does, here on earth, Turn the wheel thus set in motion, Lives, Arjuna, Maliciously, full of sense delights, and in vain. 17. He whose delight is only in the Self, Whose satisfaction is in the Self, And who... Read more

In-Between Not Alive and Alive (the abortion debate)
Last updated on: February 6, 2017 at 8:00 am By Ambaa Choate
I am a feminist, a liberal, and pro-choice…and I also think that abortion is morally wrong. A fetus is not alive but it’s also not not-alive. It is likely to become alive (although miscarriage is much more common than most people realize). I value this in-between state very highly. If all goes well that not-alive fetus will become a living human and that is a wonderful miracle. Pro-choice means exactly what it sounds like: choices. People seem to have the misconception... What Is Manusmriti (Laws of Manu)?
Last updated on: February 2, 2017 at 9:19 am By Ambaa Choate
When I was growing up I knew Manu as a book of weird sayings and rules supposedly written by the first man in existence. It was something I was aware of and we read it sometimes but I never got the impression it was something to put much stock in. I didn’t realize until I began blogging how much Manusmriti is used to try to discredit Hinduism. Those who want to paint Hinduism as backward or strange create memes with... Read more

Do Moments of Happiness Matter?
Last updated on: January 31, 2017 at 2:46 pm By Ambaa Choate
Okay, this is a strange thought and not really applicable to real life but I started wondering about it while observing my baby. He is very present. Whatever he is feeling in one moment consumes him and then the next moment it’s something else and whatever came before is gone. Most of the time he is happy and giggling and smiling. Then sometimes, of course, he is crying and upset. And when he’s upset I start to wonder if those... Read more

Does Trump Know You Aren’t Muslim?
Last updated on: January 30, 2017 at 2:12 pm By Ambaa Choate
If you think Trump can tell the difference between a Muslim and a Hindu, I’m worried for your sanity. He won this election by courting the kinds of Christians who want to make America fully Christian. Maybe they graciously allow a few people of other religions to exist here, but it would be their country. Not only that, but Trump has proudly courted white supremacists. Many of his supporters are people who think that giving equal rights and fair treatment... Read more

The Story of God: Proof of God
Last updated on: January 24, 2017 at 4:09 pm By Ambaa Choate
Proof of God is a particularly interesting topic. For me, I definitely feel God when I connect to the present moment, when I immerse in nature, when I quiet myself, and when I observe the world. I agree with the physicist that the more we learn scientifically about the world, the closer it brings us to God. I can never understand the people who see science as at odds with divinity. As I always say, if your religion can’t address... Read more

Everyone’s a Little Bit Racist
Last updated on: January 21, 2017 at 9:19 pm By Ambaa Choate
There seems to be a misperception that liberals are feeling superior to others when talking about racism. In other words, that we are saying, “You guys are racist. We are so much better because we are not.” And being a liberal myself, I don’t know anyone who means it that way (though I can’t discount that maybe there are some people with that little self awareness). I am not even going to get into systemic racism here at all, but... Read more

Degrees of Enlightenment
Last updated on: January 18, 2017 at 5:56 pm By Ambaa Choate
I’ve noticed that a lot of stories in movies and TV have the premise that regular life is dull and empty. So many characters are trapped in mundane lives devoid of meaning. People in real life too often suggest that you have to go and do something thrilling and unusual to give your life meaning. Like cooking dinner, signing kids’ permission slips, and sitting on the couch watching TV is not enough out of life. And it all seems very... Read more
