What Would I Do Without God

What Do I Do When I Doubt There’s a God?

What Do I Do When I Doubt There’s a God? 2023-07-10T10:08:34-04:00 Theresa Siller

LOGO Patheos Explore the world's faith through different perspectives on religion and spirituality! Patheos has the views of the prevalent religions and spiritualities of the world.

What is the Purpose of It All?

There are days –most of us have them, when we just have trouble believing there’s a God. Don’t we all and our Earth just exist because of the magical Big Bang? Certainly plausible enough. And in the end, we just take a “dirt nap” forever and ever? A depressing thought.

And this world and all its horrific suffering –how could there truly be a loving God at the helm?

My doubts are powerful and creep up on me sometimes. When I hear about or witness reprehensible things, I am perplexed, and my trust in my all-sovereign God dwindles. It’s a nagging thing, and bothers me. I have to admit; I am a Doubting Thomas at times! I am always seeking some sort of PROOF.

God Nudges Me When I Get Like This

The first things that help my faith-crises are flowers.  The other day I watched bees do their thing, crawling within, collecting from the pistils and stamens. It all just works. Someone had to think of that.

The second things which help my unbelief are animals. God’s creation is pretty impressive. Intelligent Design is more intricate than a random Big Bang. It has to be! I mean, 100 species of lemurs walk this Earth! Maybe with a Big Bang, most likely only one would come to be. This reminds me that God had fun creating. He gave all our cats and dogs personalities. That is above and beyond. God is so extra.

Thirdly and most importantly, I remember my daughters when my connection to God wants to evaporate. I could never have ordered up the exact precious children God sent.

I love to create things, but I need raw materials. Only God can create something out of nothing. Pretty cool.

Troubles are a Given

I try to remember that Jesus said, “In this world you will have trouble; but take heart; I have overcome the world.” At least he is honest. This human condition will be fraught with suffering, hardship and scary circumstances.

Jesus also said he would be with us through every trauma, and that with him, we would have all the help we need.  In fact, “Do not be afraid”, appears 365 times in the Bible! When I accept God’s invisible presence helping me, I better navigate that occasional emptiness which comes over me. “We walk by faith and not by sight.” I have to work on this repeatedly.

Thy Will, Not Mine, Be Done

Emerson once said, “A little consideration of what takes place around us every day, would show us that a higher law than that of our will, regulates events; …A believing love will relieve us of a vast load of care. Oh, my friends, God exists!”
