Don’t Want to Be a Bishop? You Might Be Called Anyway 2026-08-10T21:01:03-06:00 Frederick Schmidt

You don’t want to be a Bishop.

I realize that – on the face of it – there are real attractions to it. To some it feels like “the next step” after a period of time in parish ministry. At a distance, it looks like a vantage point from which you might be able to address bigger issues. And because bishops gather to deliberate on matters of national and international significance, it looks like an opportunity to address those issues.

But lying beneath the apparent influence associated with the office – much of which is illusory – there is just a lot of hard work. And almost all of it is closer to home.

The Weight of the Office

Some of it is associated with the theological nature of the office:

You are chief pastor. If you take that responsibility seriously, it means you aren’t through with pastoral care. It means that the scale has changed, and you may not see the results as readily as you do in parish life. And those challenges are coming hot and heavy these days.

Clergy burnout and misconduct are at all-time highs; and when bishops are not proactive in building pastoral relationships with their clergy, the news that someone has “crashed and burned” often reaches the bishop last.

And – at least in my own denomination – Title IV, the mechanism for addressing those issues, comes into play almost immediately. At one time, it was modeled on military codes of justice, and the clergy were “guilty until proved innocent.” Now, in an effort to be more pastoral, the same measures are more muddled than ever. And – because there is no agreed standard of conduct – apart from the most egregious of issues, there is little that a Bishop can do once the disciplinary process is in motion.

Chief Teacher and Defender of the Faith

You are also the chief teacher. If you take that responsibility seriously, you should be thinking about another task with analogs in parish life but on a different scale: Christian formation.

And the questions about how you do that multiply rapidly: What do parishes and clergy need to know about the Christian faith? Do those priorities arise from the centrality of certain doctrines? Do they arise from obvious gaps in the formation of the clergy and laity? Or do they arise from the challenges that face the church, navigating the challenges posed by technological, cultural, and social developments?

And you can’t forget (or shouldn’t) that your efforts to address those issues are conditioned by your role as defender of the faith once received. Modern bishops don’t always know quite what to do with that requirement; and most seminaries don’t prepare clergy to do it. The dominant message for quite some time has been that – if you get a theological education – you are invited to “do” theology, and that effort is entrepreneurial and unaccountable.

But those pesky vows plunge Bishops right back into the challenge of answering questions about the Christian faith that they may have quietly side-stepped for some years: What is essential to the Christian faith? Granted, the church’s creeds build a fence around the theological ranch that allows for diversity of opinion, but there is still a fence, and the question is “What are the posts that hold that fence up?”

It’s true, you won’t necessarily get any pressure from your ecclesiastical colleagues to answer those questions. But there is that troubling business about “vowing” to answer them in front of God.

A Symbol of Unity

And then there is the theological business of being a symbol of continuity with the Apostolic faith and the unity of the church. To my mind, that has always been one of the most important reasons to have a bishop. Priests are even reminded that their ministry is an extension of their bishop’s ministry. But that isn’t fidelity to a bishop’s style, vocabulary, or their particular interests.

It’s a commitment to the “faith once delivered,” which unifies and vivifies the church’s message, as embodied in the Bishop’s own faithfulness to that calling. And if the unity of the church isn’t grounded there, it isn’t grounded in anything worth writing home about. And that requires a Bishop to insist on a fidelity to the Gospel that some clergy may have let slip, and an imperative that may be completely invisible to the laity.

Suddenly, the agreeableness that makes it possible to be elected a bishop may be the very first thing that you need to abandon when you put that miter on.

The State of the Church

But that’s not all. Then there are the challenges that arise from the current state of the church.

If you haven’t noticed, you should – in a hurry – come to grips with the dire state of the church: declining average Sunday attendance; changing attitudes toward the regularity of attendance; the deluge of activities that keep people out of church and worse yet, keep children and teenagers out of church; the attendant challenges associated with stewardship; a declining number of clergy; a steep decline in the number of seminaries to prepare them; and the impending “death tsunami” which will forever change the demographics of the nation, even as birth rates plummet.

Out of those dynamics, a host of challenges arise:

This means that the modern Bishop will find themselves working with fewer assets than their clergy; and they will need to consider cost-saving measures, as well as learn how to raise funds for diocesan operations.

But Bishops dare not focus on feathering their own ecclesiastical nest. Their first priority will need to be a reorientation of the office itself. Focusing, not on the denomination, but on parishes. Imagining how to come alongside parishes in financial peril; how to help finance parish vitalization; where and when to plant new congregations; and how to provide an array of programs that support parishes with limited resources, including youth programming, campus ministry, and spiritual formation.

And – if Bishops are paying attention to those trends – they will also be working to assemble the best and brightest to share information with clergy and lay leaders that will enhance their own efforts and introduce a brand-new level of sophistication to their work.

Called Anyway

At the risk of seeming to pile-on, that is not even the end of it all.

If someone is young enough to imagine that they might shoulder this responsibility in their 40s, they need to bear in mind that – God willing – they will be a Bishop at the mid-point of the century.

This means that they will face the consolidation of dioceses, the downsizing of denominational offices and functions, and difficult decisions about which congregations to support and which to close. Anyone who has starry-eyed visions of attending the House of Bishops meetings and taking trips to Lambeth should plan on traveling far closer to home and should be thinking instead of meeting with parishes of 10, 15, 25, or 30 people to discuss what kind of future lies ahead.

So, no, you should not want to be a Bishop. But you might be called to be one. If and only if you can hear the Holy Spirit breathing a word of hope, vision, and mission into the life of the local church at an extremely challenging time.
