What Does Gêvâh Mean For Kimberley Guifoyle & Pete Hegseth? 2026-10-16T00:32:19-04:00 Martin Thomas Johnson

This week, a lot of the news is focused on Kimberly Guilfoyle. President Trump asked her to resign after a scandal erupted over her conduct and performance as the US ambassador to Greece. Turns out she was living a lavish lifestyle.

Eventually, the expenses caught up with her as she ran up a $100,000 American Express credit card debt, which she in turn asked a Trump donor to pay off for her in return for favors. Apparently, she let her relationship with Pres. Trump go to her head.

Unfortunately, she became the victim of the pride of life (Psalm 10:4, 1 John 2:16):

The situation became so bad that President Trump has tried to distance himself from the woman who almost married one of his sons. The president and Marco Rubio became so mad at her that they requested that she resign her position.

It is hard to believe that she once campaigned for the president to help get him elected; she has even spoken at some of his political conventions. Yet, pride has caused her to fall from grace. The truth is, we often let pride blind us at some point (Obadiah 1:3-4).

What Is Pride

Pride is one of those things we know we should avoid, but still all have a hard time recognizing and preventing. It is defined as “Reasonable self-esteem: confidence and satisfaction in oneself.” Pride always focuses on ourselves and what we want.

When pride overtakes us, it is hard to discern between good and bad, safe and dangerous. We have all been blinded by our own pride at some point in life. Because pride is part of our fallen human nature (Proverbs 16:18, Mark 7:20-23).

That is why the Bible has a lot to say about pride (Ecclesiastes 7:8, 2 Corinthians 10:17-18, James 4:6). Our sinful nature makes us look out for ourselves first (Philippians 2:3-4, 2 Timothy 3:1-5, James 3:14-16).

Our sinful nature also seeks immediate happiness and pleasure wherever it can find it (Romans 8:5-8, Ephesians 2:1-3, Titus 3:3, James 1:14-15). When we live for the flesh, pride develops and can overtake us (Galatians 5:16-21, James 4:1-10, 1 Peter 5:5-6, 1 John 2:15-17). The apostles remembered their Jewish education and warnings about pride.

Gêvâh

The Torah tells us that Adam and Eve liked what they saw in the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil; their pride led them to eat it and disobey God (Genesis 2:9; 3:6). Mankind’s pride fueled their desire for more and to be like God (Genesis 3:5).

However, they were ignorant of how Satan’s pride corrupted him and got him kicked out of heaven (Proverbs 16:18, Isaiah 14:12-15, Ezekiel 28:12-17). The Hebrew word in the Old Testament for pride is gêvâh, and it can also mean “Confidence, lifting up, or exultation,” depending upon the context it is used in.

Notably, the prophet Moses is identified as one of the least prideful people in the ancient world (Numbers 12:3); that is why Judaism warns God’s people about how God hates pride (Proverbs 6:16-18):

  1. Haughty eyes
  2. A lying tongue
  3. Hands that shed innocent blood.
  4. A heart that plans wicked schemes.
  5. Feet that rush to evil.
  6. A false witness.
  7. One who sows discord among brothers.

The Jewish people wanted and expected a mighty earthly leader to be the Messiah, but Jesus came as a humble servant to fulfill the Abrahamic covenant (Psalm 2:6-9, Isaiah 9:6-7, Jeremiah 23:5-6).

Jesus warned His followers that pride comes from their wicked hearts (Matthew 15:18-20, Luke 18:9-14). He emphasized humility over self-exaltation (Matthew 23:11-12, Luke 14:7-11).

Our Rabbi flipped the script on what greatness in His kingdom is (Matthew 9:14, John 3:5). He rebuked His disciples for wanting to fight for greatness and earthly power (Matthew 20:25-28, Mark 10:35-45, Luke 9:54-55).

Pete Hegseth

This week has not been a pleasant week for Pete Hegseth. He has continued to face calls for his impeachment and removal from office from both sides of the political aisle. Then, he was heckled by protesters during a US Army conference. His continued holy crusade to use force to accomplish God’s will has received pushback from soldiers who served under his demonic leadership.  It is clear he and the MAGA base do not know God or how He works (Isaiah 55:8-9):

In a shocking twist, President Trump pushed back against the Secretary of War’s plans to live stream the execution of the Fort Hood shooter; maybe the president’s decision will humble Pete Hegseth.

As God’s people, we cannot follow the ways of this fallen world (Deuteronomy 7:6, 1 Peter 2:9). God put us here to be a light, not to be part of or rule this fallen kingdom (Exodus 20:1-26, Matthew 5:14-16). That is why we cannot become blinded by gêvâh!
