The big news this weekend has focused on the attempted terrorist attack on a FlyDubai flight to Israel. Allegedly, the co-pilot used an emergency ax to attack the pilot in an attempt to take over the airliner. The plot was foiled by a plumber and a dentist who stormed the cockpit to help the pilot and safely land the plane.

Almost immediately, conspiracy theories began to circulate about the plumber and his ability to handle the out-of-control airliner. Even the heroes of the story have been vilified or questioned:
- Deceptive
- Power-Hungry
- Violent
It didn’t take long for the media to conclude this was a potential terrorist attack. The copilot was known for having extremist Islamic views. Questions about why he was allowed into the plane’s cockpit after being fired by another airline over his views and suspicious activity.
Other conspiracy theories claimed the incident was meant to be a false flag to manipulate regional geopolitics. The truth is no one should be surprised by what happened, because mankind is unrighteous and evil by nature (Genesis 6:5, Romans 3:9-18).
What Is Unrighteous
Most people like to think they are right with God because they have been good enough or have done enough good works for Him to love and accept them. The Bible teaches that we cannot earn our way into heaven or God’s love, because we are all unrighteous due to our sinful nature (Romans 3:10-12, Ephesians 2:8-9).

Unrighteous is defined as, “Not Righteous: Sinful, wicked, or unmerited.” Our sinful nature corrupts and distorts our perspective of everything.
No one is immune to their sinful nature; that is why none of us are made right apart from knowing Jesus. We can only inherit righteousness when we accept the perfect sacrifice that Jesus gave for us all on the cross.
Because of this, the Bible has a lot to say about the unrighteous (Romans 5:8, 1 Corinthians 6:9, 2 Corinthians 6:18). Because of the fall, all mankind has a sinful nature and is unrighteous before God (Psalm 51:5, Romans 5:12-19).
God cannot stand to look upon the unrighteousness of man (Deuteronomy 25:16, Habakkuk 1:13, Romans 1:18). God’s nature and being are opposed to man’s sin because He is a righteous God (Romans 2:5-8, Hebrews 12:5-11, 1 John 1:5-9). The apostles remembered the Jewish education about the unrighteousness of humanity.
‘Avval
The Torah teaches that after the fall, mankind and all of creation became corrupted and unrighteous **(**Genesis 3:1-19; 6:5-13). God’s once perfect creation was now unrighteous.
The Hebrew word in the Old Testament for unrighteous is ‘avval, and it can also mean, “Wicked, unjust, injustice, iniquity, or unrighteous one,” depending upon the context it is used in.
The ancient world was extremely wicked in God’s sight; that is why He set His people apart from the world to help repair what was lost in the garden (Genesis 12:1-3, Exodus 19:5-6).
Judaism emphasizes practicing the righteous ways of God through various practices:
- Fulfilling Mitzvot
- Practicing Tzedekah
- Choosing actions over perfection
- Cultivating humility
- Misphat
Our Lord warned His followers about their own unrighteousness (Matthew 5:20; 7:21-23, Luke 12:15-21). He reminded them of the wickedness in their own hearts (Matthew 9:4; 15:18-20).

Jesus encouraged His followers to repent of their unrighteous ways (Matthew 4:17, Mark 1:14-15, Luke 13:1-5). He warned them about the deception of self-righteousness (Luke 18:9-14). He condemned the religious leaders for their unrighteous ways and hypocrisy (Matthew 23:1-12).
Christa Pike
In other big news this weekend, the fallout from the botched execution of Christa Pike continues to grow. The Tennessee prison chief resigned Saturday after the failure to properly execute convicted killer Christa Pike.

The executioner failed to inject the poison into a vein after two attempts, leading to extreme pain, but not death, as her family and many others wanted. Since the failed attempt, there has been pushback and debate from both sides of the death penalty aisle within the conservative movement:
- Just
- Moral balance
- Clear deterrent
- Proportional punishment
While I understand God’s view and right to use capital punishment, I do not understand or agree with unrighteous people judging and executing others (1 Peter 3:18). Lest we forget we are all sinners and Jesus gave us the example of showing mercy to those who have sinned or done wrong (Matthew 5:38-42; 7:12).
If a perfect God chooses to show mercy, then imperfect and unrighteous man should also. It’s funny how President Trump and MAGA are quick to judge radical Islamists who take the lives of others, but then justify blowing up drug boats, murdering immigrants, or anyone who disagrees with their legal or political view; their hypocrisy makes them ‘Avval!
