This weekend, the big news has been the sudden departure of Trump’s new press secretary, Katie Zachria. Earlier this week, the news broke that she hadn’t passed the bar, as President Trump presented her as a lawyer to the press.

Her five-day tenure in the Trump administration marks the shortest tenure of both of President Trump’s terms. The Trump administrations have been notorious for high turnover. Despite President Trump constantly boasting and bragging about himself and the quality of his workers, most have failed to live up to his expectations.
The president and his supporters have failed to learn God opposes the ways of this corrupt kingdom (Isaiah 13:11, James 4:4-6):
- Prideful
- Boastful
- Deceptive
One of the hardest things to learn as a child of God is that God hates pride and will humble His people out of His love and discipline for them (Proverbs 16:5, Hebrews 12:5-11). That is why Jesus changed the paradigm of greatness in God’s Kingdom (Matthew 7:21; 18:1-4).
Both the Jewish and Christian faiths teach and prioritize humility over earthly greatness (Proverbs 22:4, Philippians 2:3-8).
What Is Humility
Humility is something most of us understand and respect, and even have a desire for. But it doesn’t come naturally to any of us. Humility is defined as “Freedom from pride or arrogance: humble.”

We live in a fallen world that is obsessed with and fights for earthly greatness at any cost. Greatness and success can easily lead to pride. Our sinful nature makes us prideful, just like the first Adam in the garden wanted to be great like God.
Our sinful nature causes us to act like the first Adam. This is why God’s people must fight to be humble, not to be great. That is why the Bible has a lot to say about humility (Romans 12:16, Philippians 2:3, James 4:6).
After the fall in the garden, mankind became corrupted by its sinful nature (Romans 3:9-23; 5:12-19, Ephesians 2:1-3). Because of this, this fallen kingdom is for what doesn’t last to make them happy and great (Ecclesiastes 2:1-11, Romans 8:5-13, Galatians 5:19-21).
God set His people apart from this corrupt world and changed them to be humble and kind (2 Corinthians 6:14-18, 1 Corinthians 1:28-29, Philippians 2:3, Titus 3:3-7, 1 Peter 9-12). The apostles remembered their Jewish education about humility and how it sets us apart from this power-hungry world.
Ặnāvâ
The Torah teaches us a lot about humility because mankind’s sin makes us proud, even God’s people. God allowed Israel to wander in the wilderness for 40 years to humble them (Deuteronomy 8:2-3).
The Hebrew word in the Old Testament for humility is Ặnāvâ, and it can also mean “Gentleness, meekness, or help,” depending upon the context it is used in.
God wanted His people to be humble and different from the proud and fallen world (Exodus 10:3, Leviticus 20:26, Deuteronomy 8:11-18, Micah 6:8). That is why humility is a cherished virtue in Judaism (Psalm 149:4, Proverbs 22:4, Zephaniah 2:3):
- Chesed (lovingkindness)
- Ặnāvâ (humility)
- Emet (truth)
- Shalom (peace)
- Rachamim (mercy and compassion)
- Zerizut (diligence)
- Erech Apayim (patience)
- Tzeniuyt (modesty)
- Tikkun Olam (repairing the world)
While most of us forget God’s call for these, the Messiah came as the embodiment of them (Matthew 21:4-9, Luke 19:35-44, John 18:36-37). Our Lord humbled Himself and became a servant (Matthew 20:28, Philippians 2:5-8).

He taught His followers to be kind and to show mercy (Matthew 5:7, 43-48, Luke 6:35-36). Our Rabbi rebuked the religious leaders for not practicing what they preached (Matthew 23:1-15).
Our Lord taught His followers that greatness in God’s kingdom is not like greatness on earth (Matthew 20:25-28, Luke 22:24-27).
Georgia
In other big news this weekend, President Trump came to Georgia to campaign for Republican candidates. While he was in North Georgia, there were some protesters who interrupted his speech and heckled him. The president responded by calling them paid protesters and hurling insults at them. The president’s pride causes him to believe everyone likes him and supports what he is doing.

While the president claims protesters are paid, he forgets the fact that he is constantly offering voters and Americans financial rewards for voting Republican or for himself.
Later, the president was seen wandering in the parking lot and had to be led back to his motorcade before departing. The president and MAGA have failed to learn that God will humble the proud by any means necessary:
- Hardships
- Financial woes
- Pain
- Political losses
Also in Georgia this weekend, the Georgia Bulldogs suffered a surprise defeat at home. Unranked Auburn University humiliated the number one ranked college team.
I have lived in the Southeast most of my life and know how much Southerners take pride in their sports teams, especially football teams.
Yet, in the Bible Belt, many conservatives have forgotten that God humbles His people when they become proud or disobey Him (2 Chronicles 32:24-26, Hebrews 12:5-11). That is why it is better to humble ourselves than to need God to humble us. Either way, we will experience Ặnāvâ!
