The big news this weekend has been the celebration of America’s 250th anniversary of its independence and freedoms. World leaders from around the globe have allowed it and celebrated America’s success as a great nation. Even the British monarchy has congratulated this renegade former colony.

To be honest, this week has been a throwback to the America of old; true patriotism and unity have been on display around the nation despite the hardships we are facing.

Ironically, many MAGA supporters quoted the Declaration of Independence about how all men are created equal, while still protesting and criminalizing immigrants, all means all regardless of:

Nationality
Faith
Political affiliation

Despite most Americans coming together, Pres. Trump still found a way to make America’s semiquincentennial birthday all about himself. After visiting Mount Rushmore, the president and his administration floated the idea of adding President Trump to the historical monument, although he isn’t a founding father of the nation and the Park Service said there is no more room to add anyone.

The president even posted another AI image in gold of the monument with his face on it. Then, during his delayed July 4th speech, he attacked political opponents and boasted about how he was ushering in the Golden Age of America.

He even claimed to have rebuilt our military in his first term so that he could use it to do his will to overthrow Iran and capture the president of Venezuela. President Trump and his so-called conservative supporters have forgotten that it is our righteous God who commands and leads the armies of heaven and earth, because He is the Host of Heaven (Isaiah 45:12, Daniel 4:35, Revelation 5:5).

What Are Hosts

A host is most often thought of as someone or a party/nation that presides over and supports others or events. Currently, the United States is one of three nations hosting the 2026 World Cup.

Hosts are a type of provider or leader. A host is defined as “To receive or entertain others; a multitude or army.” However, the host may be secular or spiritual.

That is why the Bible has a lot to say about hosts, who they are and whom they serve (Malachi 3:17, Acts 20:28, Colossians 1:16). God’s people must humble themselves and submit to the Host of Heaven’s authority (2 Chronicles 7:14, James 4:10, 1 Peter 5:6).

God’s sovereignty makes Him the Host over everything on earth and in heaven (Psalm 24:1, Ephesians 1:11). As the Host of heaven, God is over both heavenly and earthly armies (2 Thessalonians 1:7, Jude 1:14, Revelation 7:9-14). The apostles remembered their Jewish education about the Host of Heaven.

Sabaōth

The Torah describes how God was in the beginning, ruling over the heavens and the earth after He created it (Genesis 1:1-31, Deuteronomy 4:39). The prophet Moses describes God leading as the Host of heaven over His people and how he commands His armies to do His will (Exodus 13:21-22; 14:19-20, Numbers 10:33-36, Deuteronomy 1:30-33; 31:6-8)

The Hebrew word in the Old Testament for host is sabaōth, and it can also mean “Lord of armies, armies, depending upon the context in which it is used. As God’s people, Israel was and is under the protection of the Host of Heaven (Exodus 14:19-20, 2 Kings 6:15-17, Psalm 34:7).

Thus, Israel gave God the name Jehovah Sabaōth (1 Samuel 1:3, 11, Psalm 24:10, Isaiah 47:4, Amos 4:13). And He gave them divine victory over their enemies:

Defeat of Pharaoh and his army
Conquest of Canaan
Gideon’s victory over the Midianites
Samuel over the Philistines
David over Goliath
Jehoshaphat’s Army over the Moabites
Hezekiah over Assyria

Our Lord’s birth was announced by a heavenly host of angels (Luke 2:13-14). Jesus taught His followers to humble themselves and let God exalt them (Matthew 23:12, Luke 14:11). He cautioned His followers not to live by the sword but by the Word of God (Matthew 4:4; 26:52).

Jesus warned Pilate that He could call down a host of angels to rescue Him (Matthew 26:53; 27:11-14). He rebuked His Disciples for wanting to use God’s power to do their will (Mark 10:35-45). Our Rabbi flipped the Jewish belief on greatness in God’s Kingdom (Matthew 18:1-5; 20:28)

Ukraine

In other big news this weekend, little Ukraine launched one of its biggest drone attacks in Russia, causing severe damage. The damage done by this attack, along with earlier attacks in Moscow, has been a big blow to Putin and Russia.

The smaller nation has now fought off the army of one of the world’s superpowers for over four years and doesn’t appear to be backing down. It is a clear reminder of how God promised to be with and fight for the oppressed in the land (Deuteronomy 10:18, Psalm 9:9).

God opposes the evil rulers of this fallen kingdom (Isaiah 10:1-3, Revelation 19:15):

Prideful
Greedy
Power-hungry
Unforgiving

Despite President Trump promising to end the Ukraine-Russia war on day one of his second term, he has failed to fulfill it as of yet. And many in his MAGA base aren’t happy with him.

Although the president has boasted of his negotiating skills and America’s military might, the war still drags on. As I write this, the president is preparing to head to Turkey for a NATO summit where he will meet with Ukrainian President Zelinski.

MAGA conservatives’ idolatry of a corrupt and dishonest political leader has blinded them from following their true King. They have forgotten we serve a jealous and righteous God (Exodus 34:14, Hebrews 12:29). That is why we can only trust and put our hope in Jehovah Sabaōth!
