The big news this weekend has continued to be about the crazy severe weather wreaking havoc across America. While many states in the West are experiencing extreme heat waves and wildfires, the Midwest and East Coast have been experiencing storms and more flooding.
The power and speed of these flooding storms have increased. Microbursts and tornadoes have also wreaked havoc on the Southeast. Mother Nature is on a rampage around the nation and world, just as the Bible warned us it would (Isaiah 24:4-6, Matthew 24:7, Luke 21:11, Revelation 8:7):
- Earthquakes
- Wildfires
- Storms and flooding
One of the biggest shocks this weekend has been the flooding in Southwest Missouri. The rains came in quickly, and the floodwaters rose to the point where some campers were forced to seek higher ground and climb onto their vehicles just to survive until they could be rescued by helicopters and emergency responders.

Summer camping season is in full swing, and many Americans are trying to enjoy being outside and in nature. Many campgrounds are in low or flat planes without much higher ground other than buildings and vehicles, thus the need to find and take the high ground.
Despite what many believe, this fallen nation isn’t paradise, and we need to set our sights on higher ground for eternity, instead of being jealous of what this world has and offers (Colossians 3:1-2, Hebrews 12:1-2). Our home is in heaven with the Most High God and a host of angels (Isaiah 65:17, Colossians 3:20).
What Is High
Most of us understand the importance and desire for the high ground. But being higher isn’t just a physical stationary place, or it can be spiritual or emotional. That is why so many people are chasing earthly greatness.

High is defined as “Rising or extending upward at a great distance or greater than others of its kind: taller than average, usual, or expected.” The problem is there is a right and a deceptively wrong way to get to a high place.
God’s people must be humble and let God exalt them to high places (Psalm 25:9, James 4:10). That is why the Bible has a lot to say about being high and who is the Most High (Psalm 7:17, Acts 7:48-49, Luke 1:32, Revelation 1:8).
As God’s people, we know it is better to be humble than to be prideful and exalt ourselves like this fallen world (Proverbs 11:2, Romans 12:3, Philippians 2:3). It is God’s job to exalt us when and if He chooses (Psalm 75:7, 2 Corinthians 10:18, James 4:10).
The New Testament authors teach that only God reigns above the earth in the most high places, and He is Lord over all (Acts 17:24, 1 Timothy 6:15-16, Revelation 11:15). The apostles remembered their Jewish education about who is the Most High and exults others.
‘Elyôn
The Torah tells us God was in the beginning and created everything, and God ruled over it (Genesis 1:1). He put mankind in charge of caring for the garden and only gave him one rule (Genesis 1:26-30; 2:17).
Satan deceived mankind into believing he could become great like God (Genesis 3:4-5). The Most High God still blessed Abram (Genesis 14:18-20). The Hebrew word in the Old Testament for high is ʿelyôn, and it can also mean “Highest, most high, above, upper, or uppermost,” depending on the context it is used.
Later, Abram’s descendants, Israel, were taught to serve the one true God who is the Most High God (Exodus 20:2-3, Deuteronomy 6:4-5, Joshua 24:14-15, 1 Kings 18:21). Israel gave God the name El Elyon, and God commanded His people not to follow or listen to the idols of the nations around them (Deuteronomy 12:29-31; 18:9-14):
- Ra/Amun-Ra
- Hapi/Khnum
- Hathor/Apis
- El
- Baal
- Asherah
- Chemosh
- Dagon
- other regional deities
Jesus reminded His followers to love God completely and above all else, whatever this fallen world offers (Matthew 22:37-38). He also reminded His followers not to seek earthly greatness and temporary things, but to store up treasures for themselves in heaven where moth and rust will not destroy (Matthew 6:19-21).

When He was tempted in the wilderness by Satan, the second Adam resisted the temptation to be raised to a high place (Matthew 4:1-11, Luke 4:1-13). Jesus practiced what He preached and let God exalt Him.
Our Rabbi taught His followers to seek God’s will above everything else (Matthew 6:9-15). One of the hardest lessons Jesus taught His followers was to humble themselves by not seeking greatness or high positions, but to let God exalt them, if and when He wanted (Matthew 23:11-12, Luke 14:7-11).
President Trump
In other big news this weekend, President Trump announced to the world at the NATO summit that he was at the top of the list for Iran’s kill list as revenge for killing their supreme leader.

Pres. Trump and his followers have failed to learn the lessons: be careful what you ask for, and you reap what you sow (Galatians 6:7). The president has wanted to be the greatest and most powerful president ever, and now he is at the top of the list for Iran.
Most of us have seen how the president has used his second term to seek revenge and retribution against his enemies. Now his enemies on the world stage are seeking revenge against him.
As God’s people, we cannot follow God and strive to be great like this fallen world (Matthew 6:24, Romans 12:2, 1 John 2:15-17):
- Vengeful
- Prideful
- Unloving
- Greedy
As I write this post, the United States military has launched more attacks against Iran, supposedly over Iran attacking ships in the Strait, despite our forces already destroying Iran’s Army and depleting it of missiles and aircraft.
MAGA and President Trump haven’t learned to humble themselves or to seek God’s will (2 Chronicles 7:14, Micah 6:8, 1 Peter 5:6). God’s people cannot keep fighting and playing the same game as the world does.
God’s people are called to follow His ways and be His representatives in this fallen world (Isaiah 43:10, 2 Corinthians 5:20, 1 Peter 2:9). We are called to be the followers of the second Adam, not the first who coveted the power and strength of God. That is why God’s people must submit to El Elyon!
