Patheos Explore the world's faith through different perspectives on religion and spirituality! Patheos has the views of the prevalent religions and spiritualities of the world.
This weekend, the big news has been that the Texas Board of Education passed a law requiring Bible passages to be taught in the classroom. For some reason, the GOP believes that somehow Democrats have removed God from schools and our nation.

This is part of the Christian nationalism agenda to force the Christian faith on others who have used their constitutional right to practice other faiths or none at all. That is why there is a misconception that America is a “Christian” nation. Just because our founding fathers may or may not have been Christian does not mean they intended to establish a Christian nation; if so, we wouldn’t have our freedom of religion in America.
It is clear, Pres. Trump, the GOP, and many American churches are ignorant about the Christian faith. They think because they know Scripture, they know God, but they are ignorant of the basic teachings about God (Genesis 18:14, Psalm 15:3, Isaiah 55:11, Jeremiah 32:17):
- Omnipotent
- Loving
- Omnipresent
How can Pres. Trump, his administration, and MAGA believe Democrats or immigrants can remove an omnipresent and omnipotent God from anywhere? God has not gone anywhere; He is still in America and in our schools.
God is and always will be where He chooses to be because He alone is God, not a politician or political party Deuteronomy 6:4, Isaiah 45:5). And He promises to always be with His people (Joshua 1:5, Hebrews 13:5).
The Bible doesn’t mention the United States of America as God’s people, surely God knew about America before we did since He was here in the beginning and will be here in the end (Genesis 1:1, Revelation 1:8). Regardless of what the president and his so-called spiritual advisors believe, God is, was, and will always be here (Exodus 3:14, Psalm 102:25-27).
Be
The problem isn’t that God isn’t in our schools or nation, it’s that God’s people, like our Jewish forefathers, have left His ways. Yet, God promised to always be there. Be is defined as, “To equal in meaning; have identity with.” It is a verb that supports an action or thereof.

Most of us think of “be” as something we are doing or where we are, can also be used as an adjective to make a profound statement. It is a powerful declaration that anyone can make, but you cannot be God.
Parents as authoritative figures use it to tell others to “be” quiet, good, or else. Be is a spiritual term also because God used it to describe His creation (Genesis 1:1, Exodus 3:14).
That is why the Bible has a lot to say about being (Psalm 46:10, Romans 12:2-12). When Scripture tells us to “be,” it is telling us how to act or who we are, or who God is. The Christian lifestyle is one of action, not words or just acquiring knowledge to live godly (Ephesians 2:8-10, James 2:14-26).
The problem a lot of believers have is that they think knowing Scripture or having knowledge makes them Christian; many fail to practice what it says to be a Christian (2 Timothy 2:15; 3:16-17). Knowing Scripture doesn’t make us Christian; believing and practicing it does.
Our faith tells us that God will always be with us regardless of where we are or our situations (Luke 15:7, Romans 8:38-39, 1 John 4:16, 1 Peter 5:7). Part of the gospel is that God will always be there for us. The apostles remembered their Jewish education about God always being there for us.
Hăvâ
The Torah tells us that God was there in the beginning, and He created the earth and the heavens (Genesis 1:1). God has always been and will always be until the end of time.
Even when Abraham didn’t know God, God called out to him and promised to be with him (Genesis 12:1-3; 15:1-6; 17:1-8). Later, when Moses asked God who to tell the Israelites He is, God described Himself as ”I Am.” I am is the present tense form of the base verb “be.”
The Hebrew word in the Old Testament for be is hăvâ, and it can also mean “Become, come to pass, or arise,” depending upon the context it is used in. After God delivered Israel from Egypt, He kept that promise to always be with His people (Exodus 13:21-22, Deuteronomy 31:6, 2 Chronicles 20:17, Psalm 46:1).
That is why the Israelites gave God the name of Jehovah Shammah (the Lord is there). God’s faithfulness to be with His people is part of His divine nature:
- Omnipresent
- Imminence and transcendence
- Continuous creation
- Divine presence
- Always accessible
During His earthly ministry, Jesus often referred to Himself as “I am (John 8:12; 9:5; 10:7, 9-14; 11:25; 14:6:15:1-5).” He identified Himself this way to remind His followers of God’s ways and presence, which is a deliberate reference to God speaking to Moses and describing Himself (Exodus 3:14).

Our Lord clearly declared His Oneness with God the Father (John 10:30), our Rabbi also prayed for His followers to be one as He is with God (John 17:21-23). He promised His followers that He would be with them in the trials of life (John 16:33). Our Lord even promised to be with us until the end of time, just like God the Father (Matthew 28:20).
Venezuela
In other big news this weekend, Venezuela is still recovering from two major earthquakes that rocked the nation, killing over 1400 people as of now and wounding thousands more. Many people asked where God is during this horrible tragedy and other natural disasters around the world.

Jesus warned us about these events that are happening in the last days, because He is already there and will be with us until the end (Matthew 24:4-14). He also warned us about false teachers and believers walking away from the truth in the end (Mark 13:5-13).
We are seeing more and more of the signs of the last days that Scripture warns us about, so we need to be busy preparing for these final days:
- False teachers
- Deceptive Angels of light
- Earthquakes
- Severe weather
The Good News is God is already there and will be with us to comfort and guide His people home (Isaiah 46:10, 2 Peter 3:10-13, Revelation 1:8; 22:13). This world is broken and needs God’s power to heal and save (Psalm 147:3, Romans 8:19-22).
No political party or a power-hungry businessman can heal or save this world; that is idolatry. God’s people must turn to and trust only Jehovah Shammah (2 Chronicles 7:14, Matthew 32:37)!
