Finding peace in the quiet seat of awareness. Image by Gemini.
Who are the top spiritual thinkers of our time? I recently asked Google Gemini this question and was delighted to see several of my favorites come up, including Thomas Moore and James Hollis. If you’ve ever explored their deep dives into the wants and workings of the soul, you know they belong near the top of the list.
Two other people that popped up are at opposite ends of the spiritual spectrum—the Christian mystic Richard Rohr and the meditation expert (and atheist) Sam Harris. Then, there were two spiritual sages who were paired together, perhaps because of their similar teachings on the ego and awareness: Eckhart Tolle and Micheal Singer.
While Tolle may be better known, Michael Singer is the teacher whose wisdom has personally helped me the most. Author of the spiritual classics The Untethered Soul and The Surrender Experiment, Singer now hosts a weekly podcast and is the director of a Central Florida meditation retreat. He has a new book out titled Wisdom Untethered: The Time for Questions.
In Wisdom Untethered, Singer addresses the spiritual challenges he hears from seekers most often, from managing mental chatter and emotional pain to surrendering control and protecting inner peace. Underneath all these topics lies a profound truth he returns to again and again, and asks at the beginning of the book:
“Life is asking you a single question: Are you willing to let go?”
Singer’s message is that our thoughts, and how we handle them, can spell the difference between a life of internal strife and noise and one of genuine peace and contentment. Here are key insights from the book adapted from his responses, lightly edited and rearranged for greater clarity.
You are Not Your Thoughts
You are not the voice in your head. You are the one who hears it. You’re the one who watches the mind, the witness who observes your thoughts and emotions.
Instead of trying to silence your thoughts, step back and watch them. Your job is not to control your thoughts. It’s to relax back into the seat of awareness and observe them.
You don’t need to ignore all your thoughts, just the ones that have no value and rob you of joy. When you practice letting go of non-beneficial thoughts, you’ll find that the you in there, the one noticing the thoughts, have a deep intuitive wisdom.
Release the Grip of the Mind
Your mind will try to get you to react, but you don’t have to. The more you relax, the more the mind releases its grip.
It’s not about doing something with the mind. It’s about stepping back and realizing that you are not the mind. You are the awareness that observes the mind. Thoughts come and go, emotions rise and fall, but you are the one watching them.
You’ve made great progress if you realize that your personal mind does not always give you good advice. You must be comfortable not listening to all the personal chatter it’s creating.
Stop Serving the Ego
The reason your ego feels so real is because you’ve been feeding it your whole life. If you truly want to be free, you have to stop serving the ego. You don’t have to destroy it or fight it. You simply need to stop feeding it.
The ego has convinced you that its survival is your survival, but that’s not true. The ego is not who you are. It’s who you think you are. When you stop serving the ego, what’s left is something beautiful, vast and free. Your true self.
When Negative Thoughts Arise
When you feel an intense emotional sensation rising within you, and your body starts to tighten up, the key is not to fight it. Don’t get lost in trying to control the mind or forcing it to relax. Instead, focus on relaxing the area around your heart.
Notice when something inside you gets triggered. Instead of tensing and closing, relax. Soften your shoulders. Open your heart. Let it pass. You don’t need to analyze it, fix it, or make it mean something. You only need to let go. The moment you stop resisting, the emotion can naturally begin moving through you.
If you find yourself back in your mind, don’t resist it, don’t judge it. Just observe it. Breathe. Relax your body. Let the energy flow. Every time you let go instead of reacting, you are cleansing yourself. You are breaking free.
Start Small
Practice letting go of small irritations. Over time, this practice will help you handle larger challenges. You’ll start to notice that what used to disturb you doesn’t anymore.
Instead of trying to make decisions based on your mind’s endless chatter, quiet down and let life show you the way. If you relax and let go of your resistance, life itself will take you exactly where you need to go, and you won’t have to wonder what to do. You’ll just know.
You Don’t Need to be Perfect
The goal is not some perfect high state where nothing ever pulls at you. The goal is to become so open, that no matter what arises, you remain centered.
You are not here to be perfect. If you were perfect, you wouldn’t be here. Earth is a place where souls are sent to evolve, and the way you evolve is by facing the experiences that challenge you.
Every single situation that tests you is an opportunity to let go. Just like a child learning to ride a bicycle, you will fall. But in that falling, you learn balance.
Recap: The Singer Method in Three Steps
Step 1: Notice. Catch yourself when a thought or event triggers a reaction.
Step 2: Step Back. Take a deep breath and retreat into the quiet field of awareness.
Step 3: Release. Relax your shoulders, open your heart, and let the energy pass.
