Being a Voodoo priestess means I get a lot of weird questions. Some questions are about hexes, voodoo dolls, and zombies. Some questions are about penis enlargement, cheating whores, and Jesus Christ. Then there are the people that seek my help in dealing with Haunted Houses. There are a lot of things that can go wrong with a house, and I’m not just talking about termites and black mold. The advice I received from the knowledgeable people who are part of my facebook group, ranged from “Can’t explain the shadow person,” to “I thought you’d be making a Haunted House.” The consensus was that the advice is pretty much the same as it is for life, which could be said to explain a lot. There are certainly some questionable suggestions out there. One article Living in a Haunted House– recommends “keep a journal and coexist,” well they are a real estate site. The top ten tips, well eleven really, for being in a Haunted House as far as this Voodoo woman can tell are as follows:
-
Check yourself, before you wreck yourself, as the song says. What are you doing in this house ? Why are you there? Do you have to be ?
-
Slam the doors, yell loudly… ironically this is also a time honored technique for ridding yourself of mischievous faeries, not like the Disney ones, the little ones that make things challenging.
-
Hold a séance. This may sound like advice that is straight out of an episode of I Love Lucy, but it’s a valid idea.

It’s been my experience that sometimes the residual energies present in a house are hanging around for a specific reason that they could use your help with.
-
Leave out some offerings of food and drink. This can be done in conjunction with a Dumb Supper, which when you think about it is a type of séance. Attempt to communicate on many different levels.
-
Call a professional. Would you call a professional to clean your septic tank? Call a professional.
-
Open all the doors and windows and cleanse with Sage (be careful with pregnant women if they are around,) Copal, Myrrh, Palo Santo or other cleansing incense. Again, this is good general advice.
-
Become the Sherlock Holmes of your own home, if you own the property or are just dedicated to discovering it’s history. Take the time and effort to do some exploring and observing. Spiritual phenomenon is very often subtle, if your refine your skills you might be surprised at what you discover.
-
Pray. If you aren’t sure what to say start with the prayers of your ancestors.
-
Salt yourself,… the windowsills, the thresholds, the corners, and wherever it feels cold, bad or otherwise funky.
-
GET OUT! There is always that point in the horror film when the evil house itself tells the people to get the hell out, if you can please do!
The Number One tip, since tip, since when I imported this file the ghosts added one more number, is…
Turn all your efforts up to eleven, like the move “This is Spinal Tap.” Don’t just use one technique for staying safe, protected, and connected in whatever way is best, use them all ! If you enjoyed what you read please share this post ! Buttons below, hopefully they aren’t haunted !
