2) Clarity and Commitment

In the passion of newness, we often forget that our love is a choice. New choices are exciting. Ten years from now, the choice may not be exciting in the same way. Passion through energy becomes passion through commitment.

If you are starting in an intimate relationship like marriage, it is important to have some honest conversation about how you feel and what you think. Marriage is not about one person meeting the needs of another. Nor is it about two people meeting each other’s needs. It is about two lives merging into one.

Clarify a vision for your relationship. What do we care about? What values are going to drive our decision making? Commitment and covenant solidify when we have shared language and mutual understanding. This is why we write vows. Getting on the same page is essential. Take the time. Have the conversations. Develop the foundation of a marriage you can truly commit to.
