There is a heaviness deep in my soul, and it is proof of the chaos that surrounds me. At almost every turn, there are traumatic things taking place, and finding joy and peace in the midst of it all, is not easy. No matter how much I try to shift the discouraging negative thoughts, they come flooding back in, refusing to be settled or calmed. Some are the typical repeating problems that seemingly never get resolved, some are concerns for others struggling with health issues, some are just the sheer disbelief in things taking place in the world we live in. These things are nothing new, but there is one new phenomenon that baffles me and breaks my heart at the same time; the devastation caused by Hurricane Helene in upstate South Carolina, where I call home, and more horrifically to our neighbors in North Carolina.

“Hurricane Helene’s Path of Devastation:  Resulting in Unprecedented Loss” A look at the impacts of Hurricane Helene on the Appalachians and the lives forever changed.

As if there was not enough to be concerned about in everyday life, this unheard of event has been added to the list. Mind you, it’s likely that we have all heard of the destructive nature of hurricanes in coastal areas, resulting in the loss of lives, homes and businesses. However, this particular hurricane hit the Appalachian Mountains and Foothills, and was no where near the coast!

In its wake, Hurricane Helene literally wiped out entire towns, leaving only destruction and debris. Mountainsides crumbled carrying massive rocks and trees and everything in its path crashing below. The flooding rivers swallowed up roads and bridges, homes and businesses, vehicles and everything imaginable. The results are horrifying to see. Honestly, the ruin left behind is impossible to describe. Entire infrastructures of roads, utilities and water sources are obliterated, making conditions dire for the residents of these areas.

The National Weather Service said this:  “Helene’s largest impacts were across the southern Appalachians where widespread severe and unprecedented flooding occurred with hundreds of fatalities and billions in property damage.  Strong wind gusts damaged property and blew trees and power lines down in a swath from the Gulf Coast to the North Carolina mountains.”

Tragically, the number of those who lost their lives, is still not known, but is said to be in the hundreds. Reports say that many may still be missing, and unaccounted for. This really breaks my heart!  It’s so unimaginable, and seeing photos seems surreal. The mountainous terrain is rough at any time, but the additional destruction is a hindrance without a doubt. Even weeks later, the accessibility to remote areas is a challenge.

“When Worry Multiplies: Battling a Storm of Thoughts” How recurring fears and news of the world’s struggles can take a toll on mental and spiritual well-being.

While Hurricane Helene is most certainly a contributing factor in the feelings that are distressing me, the fact is, there’s plenty more! It seems that even if I manage to calm one worry, there’s another immediately waiting to take it’s place. My mind is the battlefield by which the enemy schemes and lies in wait to disrupt my days, and unfortunately, he’s good at it. One thing after the other creeps in, stealing my focus if only for a little while. Then another issue rises, and the cycle continues, as it all compiles to weigh on my heart.

The enemy has plenty of ammunition to wield against me personally, and knows my weaknesses.

Simply scrolling through social media can have my heart doing flip flops, and my mind racing with unthinkable things! Tragedies seem to be taking place around the entire world, and there is no escaping it in our digital age. Photos and reports of natural disasters and wars are enough to shake me, but then, there is so much more! Political and social issues are dividing our country, evidencing the lack of morals and values in ways that I have never seen before. As a result, my heart is heavy indeed.

Last, but not least, let me say that it is blatantly apparent that the Christian faith is under attack. Obviously, with hopes of removing God from everything! But we have to make a stand, even when our hearts are heavy.

“Anchored in Faith: Turning to Scripture for Strength” How time in prayer and God’s word can renew a sense of hope and clarity.

In times like these, I first try to find time to spend alone with God, sitting quietly in a pretty place, or taking a walk. As I do, I ask Him for reassurances of His presence, and His faithfulness and try to recall my favorite scriptures to ease my mind.

I admit that this does not give me the answers for the multitude of the questions running through my head, though I wish it would. There are so many things that I just don’t understand, and I wonder “why” things happen as they do. All I can say is there seems to be “no rhyme or reason” as the saying goes, and the answers do not come.

My hope comes as I choose to shift my focus back to the fact that God knows the answers. I remind myself over and over again, that God is in control, even when I can’t see Him. I search scriptures and journal my feelings in prayers, and it helps in the hard times!

Maybe a few of these verses will help you if you are in the midst of a struggle that’s weighing on your heart too:

“So do not fear, for I am with you;
    do not be dismayed, for I am your God.
I will strengthen you and help you;
    I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” Isaiah 41:10 (NIV)

“The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer;
    my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge,
    my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.” Psalm 18:2 (NIV)

                            “The Lord is good,
                                a refuge in times of trouble.
                                                    He cares for those who trust in him…” Nahum 1:7 (NIV)
