Breaking Down Southern Baptist Rhetoric Against Same-Sex Marriage
Last updated on: June 30, 2015 at 6:24 am By Chuck Queen
While Southern Baptists have been vocally repenting of their support for slavery and Jim Crow since 1995, they have done virtually nothing to actually make amends. One of their own members, an African American pastor, noted that if the SBC was serious they would champion policies that would actually make a difference, such as criminal justice reform, education reform, and the alleviation of child poverty (and we could add others like immigration reform and confronting voter suppression laws). So, did... Read more

Will Someone Please Tell Christians That the LGBT War Is Over?
Last updated on: June 28, 2015 at 12:33 pm By Dan Wilkinson
Christians across the country refuse to accept the implications of the Supreme Court decision. Like the Japanese holdouts after Word War II, they continue to fight on, seemingly oblivious to the political, social and theological realities around them. Read more

Love Doesn’t Really Win (or does it?)
Last updated on: June 23, 2015 at 1:36 pm By Chuck Queen
On Friday, June 19, Dylann Roof, charged with nine counts of murder in the shooting deaths that occurred at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, South Carolina, appeared before a bond hearing court. Family members and friends were permitted to speak to the suspect. Roof could hear them, but he couldn’t see them. Read more

Warning! This World Has Redefined the Word Love
Last updated on: May 16, 2016 at 7:18 pm By Dan Wilkinson
A UC reader recently shared this image via our Facebook Page. Since we’ve tackled “Christian” memes in the past, and since this one conveys sentiments that we regularly hear from our friends on the (far) right of the political and theological spectrum, I thought I’d take a moment to address its not-so-subtle points. Christian Fundamentalism’s Grand Illusion
Last updated on: June 15, 2015 at 7:13 am By Chuck Queen
I often tell my conservative friends that their belief in an inerrant Bible is just as subjective as my subjective belief in an errant Bible. But they just can’t see it. They continue to shout the same refrain that their position rests on objective truth and mine subjective. Read more

A Transgender Christian Loses Her Church but Keeps Her Faith
Last updated on: June 12, 2015 at 6:17 am By Guest Contributor
Because I live “simply open” about who and what I am, at some point when our relationship deepens, the fact that I am a married Christian woman of transgender experience will become apparent in natural, relaxed, and even winsome ways — in God’s time… Read more

Churchgoer Sees Jesus in a Mocha
Last updated on: June 8, 2015 at 5:24 am By Guest Contributor
“Churchgoer Sees Jesus in a Mocha.” Can’t we picture such a headline in our news feeds? We have seen announcements like it before: “‘Virgin Mary Grilled Cheese’ Sells for $28,000.” The now-famous grilled cheese was reported to have an imprint of the Virgin Mary’s face on it. It had been stored in a baggie in a bedroom dresser for ten years before we heard about it in the news in 2004. $28,000? Are we that hungry for a glimpse of... Read more

The Duggars: Privilege and Personal Irresponsibility
Last updated on: June 7, 2015 at 5:20 pm By Don M Burrows
Nothing has laid bare how obviously conservatives’ own privilege trumps the “personal responsibility” they demand of everyone else than the ongoing saga regarding Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar’s oldest progeny and his apparent teenage preoccupation with molesting young girls. Read more
