Breaking Glass Steeples: On the God-Given Rights of Women

Last updated on: August 3, 2022 at 12:12 pm   By Eric Scot English

The amount of time dedicated to the issue of the roles of women in Church and society is incalculable. By now it seems like everything that can and should be said about the issue has been discussed, debated, and discussed some more. No doubt this begs the question, “Do we really need another article addressing this topic?” Yes. Why? Because many of our sisters are still disenfranchised in many churches around the world. Therefore, some things need to be said,... Read more

A Conversation with Keith Giles

Last updated on: May 11, 2021 at 11:58 am   By Eric Scot English

I recently had the privilege of sitting down with Author and Patheos Columnist Keith Giles to discuss many things including his newest book in the “Jesus UN” series “Unforsaken“, which explores the various atonement theories and why none of them are correct. We also had the opportunity to discuss a new book that Keith edited called “Before You Lose Your Mind: Deconstructing Bad Theology in the Church“, which is packed full of great articles by leading progressive Christians on the... Read more

Fun with Philosophy: Time & Being

Last updated on: April 30, 2021 at 3:31 pm   By Eric Scot English

Fun with philosophy is a series that explores fun topics that I find interesting. I caution you, this could break your brain – it nearly did mine. Time is a complicated issue that has a lot of ramifications depending on your view. Time just doesn’t affect aspects of the universe like space, but also affects the nature of being as well. You may be surprised to know that there are various beliefs about time – not everyone buys into special... Read more

The Weight of Truth

Last updated on: April 18, 2021 at 4:53 pm   By Eric Scot English

I remember when I officially cut ties with evangelicalism. It was a feeling of relief, like a weight had been taken off my chest, but there was also grief. Even though it has been almost 15 years since I was last a part of evangelicalism, I still remember it with a bitter fondness. I remember many of the people with affection. They were like family at a time when I had no actual family. As a teenager, there was always... Read more

A Response to Roger E. Olson’s View of Progressive Christianity

Last updated on: April 15, 2021 at 11:46 am   By Eric Scot English

Roger E. Olson recently wrote an article “Who Is A ‘Progressive Christian’ and How Is That Different from ‘Liberal Christian?’”. In his article, he differentiates between what it means to be a liberal Christian and a progressive Christian. Although I agree with his differentiation between liberal and progressive, I was a bit surprised at his assertion that Progressive Christianity is simply a catch-all phrase for “younger Christians” who support LGBTQ+, women, and other social equality rights within the Church. Dr.... Read more

A Conversation with Kristin Du Mez About Jesus and John Wayne

Last updated on: April 5, 2021 at 2:15 pm   By Eric Scot English

I had the unique privilege of interviewing Kristin Du Mez for the UNenlightenment podcast about her riveting book Jesus and John Wayne: how white evangelicals corrupted a faith and fractured a nation. If you have not read this book, you must put it on your summer reading list. In this book, Kristin offers her uniquely plausible theory by tracing the history of evangelicalism’s religious-political history, which culminates in the election of Donald Trump. This book will ruin you just a... Read more

Biblical Inerrancy Does NOT Glorify God

Last updated on: March 23, 2021 at 12:25 pm   By Eric Scot English

Biblical inerrancy is one of the most sensitive issues within the Christian culture. Those who adhere to its doctrine cannot fathom a world where the Bible can be from God and not inerrant at the same time. Inerrancy is the cornerstone doctrine for evangelicals. All theology for evangelicals is built upon this premise. It is my purpose in this article to make a concise, yet definitive stance against the inerrancy of the Bible. This is not just one argument, but... Read more

On Christendom

Last updated on: March 23, 2021 at 12:26 pm   By Eric Scot English

There are a lot of opinions as to what constitutes Christendom. However, Christendom should be understood as the confluence between the political and Christian bodies of a nation. Those who advocate for Christendom envisage a country that upholds biblical values both formally (legislatively) and informally (culturally). There are generally two types of proponents of Christendom. The first sees the U.S. as a country not that different from the nation of Israel in the Old Testament. They would like to see... Read more

Evangelicals in the Hands of an Angry God: 8 Theses

Last updated on: March 23, 2021 at 12:26 pm   By Eric Scot English

Jesus’s worst enemy was not Rome, it was His own people – the religious leaders. In 1741 evangelical preacher Jonathan Edwards preached a sermon titled “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God.” His sermon outlined the various ways in which his people were disobeying God. The sermon was meant to convict and empower the people to make changes and follow God. The sermon was later published and became a classic within American Christianity. It is important to write a... Read more
