I want to say this plainly before anything else, since this is an article about transgender athletes in the WNBA: it is not an anti-trans article. I have had nothing but positive encounters with people in the trans community, and I recognize the discrimination they have faced — often from people who claimed my own faith while inflicting it. Every sentence below has been weighed against that reality.
I have said this many times, and I will keep saying it until it stops being true: fundamentalism is not a conservative disease. It is a human one. It shows up wherever certainty becomes identity, wherever a person becomes a symbol before they are allowed to be a person. In the last few weeks, the WNBA has proven that fundamentalism will wear whatever jersey is closest.
What Sophie Cunningham Actually Said
In a July ESPN profile, Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham was asked about her politics. She said she wants to protect young girls in sport and in the locker room from having to compete against biological men. That was the whole of it. She wasn’t lobbying against a specific player. She wasn’t organizing a boycott. She said what she believed, and she said — more than once, since — that she was not doing it out of hatred. “I think that I am here to extend love,” she told ESPN. “But I also think with that love is truth.”
I don’t know Cunningham. I don’t know her heart. But I know the difference between a stated conviction and a declared war, and what she offered was the former. In fact, I would argue that she sounded more like Jesus than most.
When the Crowd Answers with a Boo
What she got back, from a real slice of the WNBA’s fan base and commentary class, was the declared war. Rallies formed outside Fever games — for her and against her. She’s been booed on the road. She’s been branded transphobic by people who, by her own account, never heard her say a hateful word, only set a boundary. Some coaches around the league publicly pushed the opposite position, which is their right. But somewhere between disagreement and demonization, a threshold got crossed, and a woman who described her own position as love-plus-truth got flattened into a villain.
This is the same machinery I’ve described in evangelical spaces for years. An idea gets attached to a person. The idea becomes dangerous. The person becomes disposable. It doesn’t matter whether the idea originates on the right or the left — the machinery runs the same. Only the fuel changes.
Political Theater in the 2027 WNBA Draft
Then came the counter-stunt. Former NBA players Enes Kanter Freedom and Royce White both announced they were declaring for the 2027 WNBA draft — as transgender women. White said he identifies as a woman “sometimes… for the purpose of basketball.” Neither man is transitioning. Neither is applying for a roster spot in good faith. They are exploiting a real gap — the WNBA’s collective bargaining agreement says only women are eligible to play but never defines the term — to make a point at the expense of actual trans people.
I want to be direct about this, because I think it deserves more scrutiny than it’s gotten: this was not a serious challenge to league policy. It was a cynical performance that used transgender identity as a prop to embarrass an institution. It is no more honest than booing Cunningham off a basketball court. Both are ways of refusing to argue the actual question, because arguing the actual question is harder than staging a spectacle.
Fairness Needs a Standard, Not a Slogan
Here is the actual question: what makes a category fair, and who decides? Other sports have already tried to answer it. The International Olympic Committee adopted a policy this year requiring a one-time SRY gene screen for anyone competing in the female category at the LA28 Games — a test for a specific marker of male sex development, not a judgment on gender identity, and not something the IOC pretends settles every hard case. World Athletics moved first; other federations are following.
I’m not interested in litigating the biology in this piece — that’s its own conversation, and a more careful one than a comment section can hold. What I want to point out is simpler: those federations wrote something down. They built a standard that can be debated, revised, and applied consistently, rather than leaving eligibility to whichever athlete’s story generates the most outrage that week. The WNBA has no such standard. It has a CBA with a word — “women” — that nobody has bothered to define, and into that vacuum has rushed every bad actor on every side, because a vacuum is where theater thrives.
The Idol Behind Both Reactions
I’ve written before about how evangelicalism traded a living God for an idea of God — an abstraction easier to defend than a Person is to follow. I think something similar has happened here, on both ends of this fight. Cunningham stopped being a 29-year-old athlete with a stated conviction and became “transphobic,” an idea to be crushed. Tétart stopped being a 34-year-old woman who said, almost sheepishly, that she knew she probably wasn’t good enough and would understand if the league never called — and became a culture-war cudgel. Kanter and White turned an actual community’s identity into a punchline to score a point about hypocrisy.
In every direction, a person disappeared into a symbol. That is what idolatry does. It doesn’t require a shrine. It only requires that we find it easier to fight an idea than to sit with a human being who complicates it.
Notice how fast the labeling happens. Cunningham says “boundary,” and within hours half the internet has already filed her under “hate.” Kanter says “I’m testing your rules,” and the other half has already filed him under “attack.” Nobody paused long enough to ask whether the label actually fit before reaching for it, because the label is so much faster than the work of understanding. Judgment that outruns understanding isn’t discernment. It’s reflex wearing discernment’s clothes. And I include myself in that indictment — I have reached for a label before I’d earned the right to use it more times than I’d like to admit.
Concluding Thoughts
I don’t have a tidy fix for the WNBA’s eligibility question, and I’m suspicious of anyone who claims they do. What I have is a conviction: the people arguing loudest on every side of this have mostly stopped talking about the actual people involved. Real fairness for women’s sports and real dignity for trans people are not mutually exclusive goals — they only look that way to people who’ve already decided the other side is the enemy rather than a party to a hard conversation.
Cunningham said it better than most of the professional commentary that followed her: love and truth together, not love instead of truth, and not truth as a cover for cruelty. That’s not a slogan. It’s a discipline. And it’s in shorter supply on a basketball court — or a comment section — than almost anywhere else I can think of.
A Note On Comments:
Because of the sensitive nature of this topic, I will not allow name-calling or any other ad hominem attacks in the comments. If you resort to that, your comment will be treated as hate speech and removed. But if you want to engage in good faith, I genuinely want to hear from you.
