By Fr. Stephanos Pedrano, O.S.B.
Anno Domini, “In the Year of the Lord.”
Luke 17:26-37 for Friday of the Thirty-Second Week in Ordinary Time.
So it will be on the day the Son of Man is revealed.
In today’s Gospel, Christ tells of his Second Coming.
He makes clear it shall happen as a sudden surprise.
Without our ever knowing when it is to take place, we are always to be ready beforehand every day in every Year of the Lord.
We might go through life never having suffered in a battlefield, car accident, terminal illness or natural disaster.
Yet, NONE of us shall escape the LORD.
But who of us is ready?
Every Sunday we stand to profess our faith that Christ will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end*.*
One day, every soul shall see Christ the King bringing on the new heavens and the new earth.
However, his Second Coming also happens for each of us— one by one— at the hour of our death.
But there is another kind of ongoing Second Coming.
And it is an ongoing end of the old world and arrival of the new heavens and the new earth.
In his Eucharist, Christ sacrificed on the Cross still offers up his Body given and his Blood poured out.
The Risen Lord in his Eucharistic Covenant gives us his glorified Flesh and his living Blood in the signs of food and drink.
In the mystery of his Eucharist, he is always the one coming again in glory to judge the living and the dead*.*
Since we agree to eat and drink his Eucharistic Covenant, he expects us to live as mindful bearers of his Second Coming each day in our own flesh and blood.
To be truly IN CHRIST is to let Christ be in the world by how we live every day in every Year of the Lord.
Turn. Love. Repeat.
