Toward Black Muslim Liberation Theology

The suffering of black people is unjust, unbearable, and requires urgent action. White Supremacy renders black life devoid of value making their bodies disposable. This manifest not only through pervasive acts of police brutality, but also through an entire system of institutional racism that leads to lower life experiences, inferior education, and inferior standards of living for black people. The Prophet Muhammad(Peace be Upon Him) stated:

“All mankind is from Adam and Eve. An Arab has no superiority over a non-Arab, nor does a non-Arab have any superiority over an Arab; a white has no superiority over a black, nor does a black have any superiority over a white; [none have superiority over another] except by piety and good action. “

Malcolm X expressed his vision that Islam through its message of God’s oneness had the ability to cure the racism of America. Yet, have Muslims taken up this mantle to boldly combat the racism that exist in America? In the last interview prior to his assassination, Malcolm X stated,”the Muslim world has seemed to ignore the problem of the Black American.” As Muslims, we need to work to restore a society in which the divinely recognized value that black life has is firmly restored and recognized.

These Khutba ideas are dedicated to upholding the Islam’s anti-racism principles found in the final sermon. These Khutba ideas are rooted in the theological premise of white supremacy as shirk and rooted in the spiritual struggles of the descendants of black slaves in America. It is aimed at reinvigorating Muslim communities to challenge the anti-blackness.

First Khutba: Why does obedience to God require challenging white supremacy?
