There is no problem with the Secret Service taking necessary action to protect the President of the United States, as they did justifiably in Turkey. But did their actions unnecessarily violate the rights of vulnerable civilians–and was that even a concern? Were morality, ethics, and law considered in the methods used to protect Trump? I don’t think so.
When I first learned about Trump’s covert departure from Turkey last month, one thought haunted me: The President used unknowing, unarmed, untrained civilians—journalists and White House staff—as human shields to protect himself from an Iranian assassination plot. The shields had no idea. They were never asked, and they never consented to their roles in the operation. And that, to me, is a staggering moral and ethical offense.
What Happened on the Turkish Tarmac?
Here’s the sequence:
- Trump publicly boarded the older Air Force One in front of cameras.
- Moments later, he slipped away secretly through the cargo area of a catering truck.
- He was then flown to Britain on a smaller Air Force C-32A plane.
- Meanwhile, journalists and some staff believed they were on the president’s plane.
- They were told to keep their window shades closed during the flight.
In reality, those reporters and staff were on a decoy plane—a target designed to draw any potential attack away from Trump himself. They were taking the fire for him–without knowing it.
The Immorality of Using Civilians as Shields
Intelligence agencies had identified a credible Iranian assassination threat. That’s serious. Presidential security is non-negotiable. But when did it become acceptable to place unknowing civilians in mortal danger to protect one man?
These weren’t trained Secret Service agents or military personnel. They were journalists doing their jobs and staff fulfilling their duties—never asked, never informed, never given a choice.
When asked why the window shades had to stay closed, Trump later said, “If I go, you go. Right?” Think about that. The worst part? He wasn’t the one at risk. They were.
Precedent Doesn’t Equal Morality
President Bill Clinton once used a similar tactic in 2000, flying into Pakistan on an unmarked jet while sending Air Force One as a decoy. But precedent doesn’t make it right. Just because it’s been done before doesn’t justify it. (It’s also curious to use Clinton as a standard for acceptable presidential behavior.)
The real question is: Do we accept a system where the powerful sacrifice the powerless without the latter’s knowledge or consent?
What This Reveals About Power and Ethics
The White House Communications Director said, “There are many enemies of America who have their sights on him.” Fine. But how the administration responded reveals its view of human life: only one life matters, and the rest are expendable.
Trump didn’t cancel the trip. He didn’t increase security for everyone. He didn’t inform those traveling with him. Instead, he invisibly shifted the risk onto others.
This isn’t partisan politics. It’s about basic human dignity and ethics. Leaders using civilians as unwitting decoys is a fundamental violation of the God-given right to preserve one’s life.
How Should Presidential Security Be Handled?
Here’s my amateur suggestion: Instead of risking civilians, the president could have been called into a private meeting and slipped out quietly to the secure plane. Once out of danger, an announcement could have been made, with evidence presented, that the President was safely out of the area, wouldn’t be on any other planes, and that civilians were given the option to choose safer transportation.
I’m sure professionals could improve on this idea, but it’s clear that protecting everyone wasn’t the priority.
Why This Should Matter to All of Us
Whether you support Trump or not, this should outrage your conscience. Using unknowing civilians as human shields is immoral, unjust, and possibly illegal. It strips people of their right to informed consent and treats them as disposable.
If we don’t speak up, demand accountability, and insist this never happens again, we normalize authoritarian practices that devalue human life and dignity.
Final Thoughts and A Challenge
The president deserves protection—no question. But at what cost? Who decides who is expendable? These are questions we must ask loudly and clearly.
Let’s refuse to accept a world where the powerful shield themselves by sacrificing the powerless. Our humanity depends on it. Here’s what you can do right now, beginning in the comfort of your own home or office:
- Send an email to your members of Congress demanding that they investigate this matter and hold public hearings. Find their contact info here.
- If you’re clergy, use your voice and influence to call out this unethical practice, visit your Members of Congress (even organize a faith leaders’ delegation), and mobilize your people to demand congressional action and oversight. If you’re a layperson, appeal to your faith leaders for their involvement and support.
- Share this article and other similar posts on social media.
- If you’re an educator, raise this serious ethical question with your students as a topic.
- Talk about this with family, friends, coworkers, and anyone with a common interest.
- Make a sign about it and carry it during the next public demonstration against this supremely immoral, unethical, illegal, and unconstitutional presidency.
