Wisdom from Bonhoeffer’s Preaching

Last updated on: March 16, 2018 at 9:03 pm   By Mark Craymor

On a recent trip to New York City, I found this gem buried in the stacks at the Strand Bookstore: The Collected Sermons of Dietrich Bonhoeffer. The sermons in the compilation span about a decade from 1928 to 1939. The final sermon in the book was preached in November of 1939, just a few months before Bonhoeffer was forbidden to speak in public by the Nazis. I want to quote some portions of a sermon that relate to how a... Read more

Book Recommendation: Surprised by Hope

Last updated on: March 8, 2018 at 8:11 pm   By Mark Craymor

One of my favorite N.T. Wright books is on a major Kindle sale ($1.99 when I published this). It’s called Surprised by Hope: Rethinking Heaven, the Resurrection, and the Mission of the Church.  If you’re interested in learning more about “heaven” and how God’s promised future ought to impact your life in the present, I would recommend this book! It does an excellent job dismantling some of our typical misunderstandings of the age to come and helps you reimagine the significance... Read more

Should all Christians become vegetarians? Pt. 2: On creation

Last updated on: November 23, 2019 at 8:24 pm   By Mark Craymor

This is Part 2 in a series of posts exploring the question “Should all Christians become vegetarians?” In Part 1, I tried to lay the foundation for why this question is one that Christians, particularly American Christians, ought to take seriously. I concluded the first part with the great quote from Alasdair MacIntyre: “I can only answer the question ‘What am I to do?’ if I can answer the prior question ‘Of what story or stories do I find myself... Read more

Two (and a half) Lent Devotional Recommendations

Last updated on: February 14, 2018 at 1:09 am   By Mark Craymor

What do you recommend? Several people have asked me for recommendations for Lenten devotionals. Finding a solid devotional for these rich seasons can be a tricky thing. In the past, I haven’t found very many great options… or at least, I haven’t found very many free options that are readily available online (maybe that’s my problem!). In any case, given my line of work, I spend a considerable amount of time each week studying the Scriptures. That being the case,... Read more
