We Make Mistakes Along The Way. But Until That Final Breath, There Will Always Be . . . Second Chances.

Cries in the night,

You sought my comfort and reassurance.

Sleeping lightly in those days,

I found my way to you quickly.

You didn’t seem to mind my voice when I sang to you,

Always off-key.

And you’d slowly fall back to sleep;

The soft, slow rising of your chest

Signaling peacefulness, and my time to leave.

As you grew, as I got older, things distracted me,

Things which absorbed my attention, and demanded my time.

They all seemed so important back then.

Some were. But others were a waste.

My mind, my heart, my body were split.

I gave you not enough of what you wanted,

Not enough of what you needed or deserved.

The time. The attention. The inclined ear. The gentle response.

But you always had my heart, such as it was.

Now words, ideas, and distance, stand between us.

I drive you crazy with my clumsy attempts

To connect in the only ways that I know how.

I fail often. But I keep at it.

You know that I’m not one to ever give up,

No, not while there’s one breath left in me

And there’s yet time for second chances.

I pray that you sleep well tonight.

But know that I am listening for you.

Still.
