14 Things I am Praying for on the Anniversary of 9/11 2015-12-11T16:54:41-04:00 Brandon Mark Showalter
Patheos Explore the world's faith through different perspectives on religion and spirituality! Patheos has the views of the prevalent religions and spiritualities of the world.
Fourteen years ago I was a junior in high school sitting at my desk in Mrs. Funkhouser’s Math Analysis/Pre-Calculus class learning the difference between sine, cosine, and tangent when the principal came on the PA to inform us of the terrorist attacks in New York City. It is hard to believe that pivotal event in world history now lies near the midpoint of my life; I have been alive almost as many years since it happened as I have been alive before it happened. Here are 14 things I am praying for today. Do join me if you are so inclined.
1 . For the American people to humble themselves and pray, to turn from evil, with broken and contrite hearts, that God might not forget what He has spoken and that He would come and heal our land (2 Chronicles 7:14).
2. For terrorist plots be exposed, foiled, and ultimately stopped all around the world.
3. For the peace of Jerusalem (Psalm 122:6).
4. For President Obama, Vice President Biden, Congressional leaders, state governors, military officers, police, firefighters, and first responders, and all those in governmental authority (1 Timothy 2:2).
5. For the people of Iraq, Afghanistan, and every nation affected by the wars after 9/11.
6. For our vets who fought in those wars, many of whom were physically maimed, and are now suffering with PTSD.
7. For the Holy Spirit to continue to comfort the families of the victims of attacks.
8. For the people of America to remember this day, and put aside bitter differences, even as our politics seem to get crazier by the minute.
9. For the Church to recognize that the real battle is not against flesh and blood but against the rulers, authorities, and spiritual wickedness (see Ephesians 6) and would learn to stand in her authority!
10. For all missionaries out on the front lines, furthering the gospel of Jesus Christ and his Kingdom, for it is only thing that can truly transform the human heart.
11. For the enemies who seek our destruction, that they would have encounters with the living God, that Sauls would become Pauls.
12. For the children who lost parents in the attacks.
13. For the parents who lost children in the attacks.
14. For eagle-eyed vision, foresight, and prophetic understanding of the times we live in.
All these things we ask in the name that is above all the other names, Jesus Christ the Lord.
Amen.
