My Companions, Trust and Thankfulness

Let Trust and Thankfulness be your companions. Faith Richardson/Photographer
Sarah Young in her book, Jesus Calling, reminded me that we should allow Trust and Thankfulness to be our companions because Trust protects us from worrying and obsessing and Thankfulness prevents us from criticizing and complaining. What a great reminder!
This past year I have danced, dined, and deliberated with the WRONG company! I have allowed Self-Pity and Self-Denial to lead me down paths of destruction, but boy has that backfired. God not only allowed me to walk that path, but He gave me new perspective as to what was really happening and I was able to detach from it and watch from the side lines how it would play out.
Was it painful? Heck yeah! So much that I thought I would rather die than experience it, but as I watched I realized that with Jesus by my side it wasn’t as bad as my companion, Self-Pity, was painting the picture for me.
Beautiful Masterpiece
I snatched the brush from her and handed it to Jesus. Then, I watched as the magic began. With each stroke of the brush, I realized, What a beautiful masterpiece. Even in the places too painful to witness I was able to admire. I was able to watch even though I was being shredded like an unwanted document.
Once I invited Trust to tea, I could watch Jesus work and not be frightened that He just dipped His brush into the darkest of colors. That with each stroke of His brush He was creating the next steps in my life and with Trust by my side I not only didn’t have to figure out where to step, but I didn’t have to worry about what shoes to wear either. He had it all planned out. (For I know that Plans I have for you, declares the Lord…Jeremiah 29:11)
It took me a little longer to invite Thankfulness to tea, but now I wouldn’t even think of having tea without her, although she’s really more of a coffee kinda gal.
