Patheos Explore the world's faith through different perspectives on religion and spirituality! Patheos has the views of the prevalent religions and spiritualities of the world.
I’m trying to write this post about Hillary Clinton and it’s difficult because the freakin list is so stupid. “She cares about children everywhere”… uh, unless they are in the womb of a poor mother, then she’s down to end their life, or the children killed by drones. She doesn’t really care about those children. The children she cares about are the ones who have parents who have money and can send them to private schools and college who will become “successful” as rated by people like Hillary Clinton.
See, I am a Hispanic Grandmother. It took me about 30 minutes after reading the #NoMyAbuela hashtag to realize that. I suddenly sat up in bed and said “Dude! I’m a Hispanic grandmother!! That fool is talking about how she is like ME!! Oh, hell no.”So let me just tell you Mrs. Clinton are nothing like me. I’m nothing like you, and I’m pretty proud of that fact.
Like Mrs. Clinton, I’m expecting my second grandchild to enter this world next year. Unlike Mrs. Clinton, I recognize the humanity of that child now as she is growing in her momma’s womb. According to Mrs. Clinton’s worldview, her daughter could end that life right now and it would be fine because that grandchild isn’t a human person. But wait, that isn’t quite true because unlike us poor women -who shouldn’t give birth to our children because that wouldn’t be responsible- Chelsea is rich and white, so of course her fetus is a human! And not only is that child a human being, but that child can also be used as a campaign tool, because nothing says “Grandma loves you” like objectification.
My grandmother was the wife of a migrant worker. Her and her 11 kids and husband worked the fields in the panhandle of Texas to survive. I doubt Hillary has ever stepped foot on a field to work. My grandmother was a badass. She was crazy, had a hot temper, a quick whit and was not someone you would want to make mad. I learned how to make tamales by her hitting me in the back of the head when I didn’t do it right. My grandmother fought hard to live when she had only one kidney. My grandmother could dance a mean cumbia. My grandmother didn’t speak English and couldn’t read or write and suffered from a lot of things, yet she managed to survive in this world.
When I told my grandmother that I was pregnant at 16, she didn’t tell me to kill my child, she told me to take responsibility for myself and that I was capable of being a mother. When my son was born she loved him and taught me how to take care of him (by cussing me out and hitting me in the back of the head). My grandmother was everything that Hillary Clinton isn’t.
Who the hell in the Clinton campaign thought that her using the word “abuela” was a good idea? They need to be fired. Whoever it was, is obviously so out of touch with the Hispanic culture, as are many Hispanics in the Democratic party. They have no idea just what our grandmothers have been through. Our grandmothers didn’t have privileged lives. My grandmother and mother didn’t even have an education! I dropped out of school in the 10th grade and now I’m in college at the age of 38.
Hispanic grandmothers work hard, we love our families, we will cut anyone who tries to hurt them, we defend the lives of our grandchildren and our grandchildren will defend us as I’m sure Mrs. Clinton is well aware of now. The one thing about Hispanics, we will stick together when someone offends us and we will call out bullshit so fast it will make your head spin, no matter who you are.
We will stand together and say, “Hillary Clinton is #NotMyAbuela”, not even close!
My first grand-baby. I saw her heartbeat when she was 7 weeks gestation, nobody can convince me that she wasn’t a human life then.
My second grand-baby! She will be here soon. Doesn’t she look like a total clump of cells?! Umm, no, she’s a baby.
