“The Discipline of Place” and Things to Read this Week

“The Discipline of Place” and Things to Read this Week 2013-10-10T15:59:15-04:00 Amy Julia Becker

LOGO Patheos Explore the world's faith through different perspectives on religion and spirituality! Patheos has the views of the prevalent religions and spiritualities of the world.

I finished The Little Way of Ruthie Leming. I thought it could have been even better than it was, but I still ultimately recommend it. This was my favorite line: “St. Benedict considered the kinds of monks who moved from place to place all the time to be the worst of all. They refused the discipline of place and community, and because of that, they could never know humility. Without humility they could never be happy.”

Started Sun Shine Down by Gillian Marchenko. Good, spare, vivid writing so far. Still riveted by Andy Crouch’s Playing God: Redeeming the Gift of Power. And looking forward to Alice Munro’s new book of short stories, Dear Life, which looks like it is up next. And really, I had it in line on my bedside table before she became the 13th woman to win the Nobel Prize for Literature!

As for listening, I abandoned Bossypants, at least for now, and started Here if You Need Me by Kate Braestrup, a game warden chaplain in Maine who became a widow with four young children and writes about her experiences of life and death and love. I’m loving it so far.
