LOGO Patheos Explore the world's faith through different perspectives on religion and spirituality! Patheos has the views of the prevalent religions and spiritualities of the world.

Joy to the World , the Lord is come! Let earth receive her King; Let every heart prepare Him room, And Heaven and nature sing, And Heaven and nature sing, And Heaven, and Heaven, and nature sing.

“Let every heart prepare Him room.”

It struck me this morning that there are three aspects to the waiting we do in the season of Advent. First, there is the waiting of longing, yearning, the waiting expressed in the mournful tunes like “O Come O Come Emmanuel.” This is the waiting of recognition that all is not well in the world, that we need a Savior and Redeemer to make it right.

Then there is contented waiting, waiting that hearkens back to Psalm 131, where the image comes to us of a baby held in her mother’s arm, quiet, at peace.

Finally, there is anticipatory waiting, the eager excitement that looks forward with joy to the Lord’s coming. Children give us a picture of this type of waiting at Christmas time. And so does the tune of “Joy to the World.”

So, as we wait–with longing, contentment, and eager anticipation–“Let every heart prepare him room.”
