How Far Can You “Lean In” If You ARE Pretty?

Last updated on: January 12, 2015 at 12:15 am   By Aliza Worthington

Tracy Thompson wrote a great piece on the The Broad Side today, entitled, “How Far Can You ‘Lean In’ If You’re Not Pretty?” It laments the universal inequity of the role of attractiveness between the genders. Men can soar in their careers being merely average-looking, but in order for women to soar, they must be drop-dead gorgeous. A quick look at some Forbes’ “Top 20 CEOs” lists confirms her suspicion. We all know this is true. It’s played out (of course) in entertainment to the... Read more

Silver Bullets? I’d Rather Have Chocolate Ones.

Last updated on: January 27, 2014 at 1:59 pm   By Aliza Worthington

A seven-year-old boy named Myles wrote a letter to Vice President Joe Biden with his solution for gun violence. Chocolate bullets. The Vice President is completely on board with this idea, because, as he says in his letter back to Myles, “People love chocolate.” Some fellow writers at The Broad Side had very strong reactions to this story. Danielle declared “If someone shot me with chocolate…they would be my new best friend.” Karen insisted “must be milk chocolate. Dark gives me migraine.” It did strike a nerve,... Read more

So, Then I Covered the President…

Last updated on: January 27, 2014 at 1:59 pm   By Aliza Worthington

Yeah, so I’ve been fortunate enough to have some of my writing published on The Broad Side lately, and the fabulous Joanne Bamberger (publisher and editor) added me to the Facebook group of contributors where she and others leave fodder for potential pieces for the site. Last Wednesday, she posted a press release about President Obama visiting a manufacturing plant in Baltimore, and asked if anyone would like to cover it.  And I’m all, “Hey!  I live in Baltimore!” and... Read more

A Fork in the Grass

Last updated on: January 27, 2014 at 1:59 pm   By Aliza Worthington

The following is a conversation that really took place last week, with no embellishment on my part.  Allow me to set the scene: Nicky’s baseball game.  Sunny, beautiful, breezy Sunday afternoon.  I was sitting next to our friend, Glen* – our boys have played baseball together for the last few years, and even though he comments on the articles I put on fb without reading them, I still let him be friends with me, because I’m cool like that. Anyhow,... Read more

Happy Mother’s Day!

Last updated on: January 27, 2014 at 1:59 pm   By Aliza Worthington

Here’s why I love this comic strip very much. One might read this and think its creators are saying, “Damn teenagers.  They have no vocabulary.  They never talk to us.  They never TELL us anything.” I see something completely different in this comic strip. 1.  Teenagers are moody. 2.  Teenagers have trouble figuring out what’s bothering them. 3.  Even if they know what’s bothering them, they have trouble articulating it. 4.  Parents should keep their questions simple.  Like, “Trouble?” 5.... Read more

A Jewish Kid in Catholic School? Nothing But Nachas.*

Last updated on: January 27, 2014 at 1:59 pm   By Aliza Worthington

My son Nicky loves baseball. He’s really, really good at it. Despite the looooong list of Jews who made it big in baseball, we were shocked to learn our town was not overflowing with Jewish schools that have viable baseball programs. My husband’s old Catholic school, however, (“The Hall”) has a very well-respected baseball program. So does another Catholic school nearer to us (“The Mount”). Mark Teixeira is a hometown boy who went to The Mount. We forgive his playing for the... Read more

Lost In Suburbia – Book Review*

Last updated on: January 27, 2014 at 1:59 pm   By Aliza Worthington

Lost in Suburbia – A Momoir contradicts itself right there in the subtitle.  How I Got Pregnant, Lost Myself, and Got My Cool Back in the New Jersey Suburbs.  Apart from being a mouthful, everyone knows it’s practically impossible to get your cool back in the Jersey suburbs.  Of course, I had to read.  Let me tell you, Tracy not only achieves “cool,”  she attracts “cool.”  She discovers it’s possible to be cool AND live in New Jersey, and she makes... Read more

I’m Still Here…and There, and There, and Sometimes Over There…

Last updated on: January 27, 2014 at 2:00 pm   By Aliza Worthington

Hello, people! I realize it might seem I go dormant for a couple of weeks on the blog, but I assure you that’s not the case.  Except for when it is.  But really, at the moment, it’s not the case. Sometimes I’m published other places, and sometimes I get paid for it, and other times I don’t, and sometimes if I publish something HERE, that makes it so I can’t publish it somewhere else, etc.  Sooooooo, I will do my... Read more
