Finding the Fae in Your Space

Patheos Explore the world's faith through different perspectives on religion and spirituality! Patheos has the views of the prevalent religions and spiritualities of the world.
So you wanna connect to the Fae. Awesome! Just like deciding you wanna connect with a wild bear, it’s important to take precautions and know what you are getting into before you even begin. However, the good news is you don’t have to go any further than where you live. It’s actually quite easy to find Fae in your space.
Go out into your yard (or sit in your window) and find a place where you can sit undisturbed for at least twenty minutes. You will need to be able to return to this place every day for at least a week, but ideally this is a place where you should return often throughout the year and at different times of the day. This isn’t a meditation or a journey; this is a sit spot.
People who do tracking or hunting are likely familiar with the concept of a sit spot. When you return to the same place in your yard over and over again, you become familiar with that place. You begin to see patterns. You begin to tune into the landscape and flora and fauna that live there. It’s important that while you are in your sit spot you blend into the space. Not like camouflage, but an energetic blending in, a becoming part of the space. The point is to connect to the Land and the Spirits that dwell there. To remember that you are connected to this Land and the Spirits. You don’t want to come in stomping around with poor manners like a rude tourist. You want to immerse yourself in the landscape and fold yourself into what is already happening.
When you are in your spot, just sit, but also pay attention, especially to your peripheral vision. Be in your place and watch what happens. Be present. Notice what you see out of the corner of your eye. Notice places where something may be off, odd, or different. Take note of any places where there is too much of something or, conversely, not enough. Any areas where Fae are already spending time will start to stand out to you.
Fae spots may also be present in naturally occurring spots – holes in a tree, rock formations, interesting or odd bends in plant life, old trees, naturally occurring crossroads (and occasionally man-made crossroads too), places where plant life seems to be circular, mushroom rings, and other interesting places. Watch these places, but don’t try to go into them!
These things may not become obvious the first time you go to your sit spot. It may take several days or even weeks before it becomes clear, but you are working on developing a relationship with the Fae, and relationships take time. You need to show the Spirits of the Land that you are trustworthy.
Keep a log of your experiences, even if it felt like “nothing happened”, let yourself be more subtle with the process. As you become more familiar with your spots energetic signature you might want to start leaving offerings to take the relationship one step further. Move slowly, be respectful, and have fun exploring.
