A Generation Searching for God in All the Wrong Places

Holidays Are Upon Us!

Welcome to October! We are officially in the last quarter of 2026! In a recent conversation with some colleagues, it was mentioned that it is unthinkable the holidays are upon us. October brings many things to observe and celebrate, such as National Spread Joy Day on the 11th. Shoutout to everyone celebrating a birthday this month- blessings and love to all!

Spiritual & Cultural Climate

With the holidays upon us, schedules tend to get extra tight with our routine schedules, and the added fall event schedules. Here at Thriving Life, we will be revisiting some original messages to see where we are in our current spiritual and cultural climate. We want to examine whether we have closed some gaps or still where we were at the time of the original message.

Any Growth?

This time last year, the message was on having a posture of revival as followers of Jesus Christ. Our call to action was focused on positioning ourselves before God in humility rather than be distracted by fear, confusion or sensationalism. [patheos.com] A brief visit with the writing focus group suggest we are still where we were last year and, in some respects, even worse off.

Sense of Calling

Over the summer, American Bible Society (July, 2026) released its insights around how Americans view their sense of calling through the lens of Scripture engagement as part of its State of the Bible. It was encouraging that the sense of “calling” among God’s people is strong and stable. This is the reason for this post’s title. Everything that seem to point to the fact that we are worse off, only confirms the truth that this generation is searching for God in all the wrong places. And this is where the people of God come in- with prayer in one hand, and preaching the gospel in another, there is no better time than now, to both pray and preach this generation into the kingdom of God.

Adapted from the original October 2025 article Posture of Revival [patheos.com]

Posture of Revival

God is calling His people to posture ourselves for revival. God is the architect of revival. His Spirit is the One who accomplishes change in the hearts of people. We have been blessed to see sprinkles of revival through the years. Many will say we are in full-on revival mode. When we go back to the Scriptures, we can see what revival looked like for the early church and where we are today. If we are seeing one in twenty-five people who are followers of Christ around us, our work of posturing ourselves as believers is cut out for us- until we see one in two people who are believers, we continue to cry out for revival. Also, revival will not be concentrated to a specific place- it will be happening simultaneously in different places all over the world. Only the Omnipresent Spirit of God can accomplish this.

God’s Vessels

The good news is- God’s Spirit works through His vessels (2 Corinthians 4:7). However, these are not just any vessels. Revival comes with a cost, just like the scriptures show us (2 Timothy 2: 20-21). Followers of Christ get to choose which type of vessels to be as our posture for God’s Spirit to fill us to overflowing.

Elements of Revival

Dr. Richard Lovelace, one of America’s theologians and church history educators, explained well the best postures of revival for the church collectively. These postures of revival are directly tied to Scripture. He explained that seven elements are necessary for an explosion of revival in our times. As God calls His people to posture ourselves for revival, may these elements be evident in every believer in Christ and, most importantly, every spiritual leader. They are: Depth of God’s Presence, Depth of Holiness, Spread of the Gospel, Transforming Prayer, Reformation of the Church, Empowerment of the Holy Spirit, and Massive Societal Impact. Our work is cut out. May the LORD help His people!
