Back To School
Welcome to the month of August dear Patheos friends! After a great FIFA summer, families and educators around the nation are gearing up for the new school year. So, it’s time for the “get ready” reminders as parents get the children to back to school routines. Also, a reminder for the general public, to be cognizant of school zones while driving. The month of August is filled with lots of observations and celebrations. There is even a National Toasted Marshmallow Day. Be sure and enjoy all what the month brings. Happy birthday shout out to everyone celebrating this month. Much love and blessings to each celebrant.
Feedback Items
One of the feedback items from the last post was very touching and the foundation for this post. A parent shared how when he went to public school in his state, prayer and Bible reading were the norm. He echoed his dismay at the deception feed to students about God, the Bible and living for God in our current world. Getting to talk with him, he shared more about how American believers need spiritual resilience in a rapidly changing America.
What Is Spiritual Resilience?
This precious parent helped me with his knowledge and firsthand experiences of what he has seen change spiritually in our nation. Some of his reasons are categorized in the paragraphs of this post. Spiritual resilience is a believer’s ability and capacity to remain rooted, steadfast and unshakeable in his or her faith in God while navigating all the facets of the culture, such as cultural, political, health, economic, and societal shifts. The 2020 pandemic was a major health shift in our era, and we are still navigating the aftermath. We saw how this health shift affected the faith of some believers, not just here in America but around the world.
Power Of A Renewed Mind
Spiritual resilience is necessary to live a life that honors and pleases God. Romans 12:2 is a foundation for spiritual resilience. It states, “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” A renewed mind is key to spiritual resilience because it means nonconformity to the pattern of this world. A look at our world from a wide variety of data shows Americans stressed, mentally strained, socially fragmented, spiritually hungry, spiritually fatigued, economically unstable, relationally broken, and the list goes on.
Some Data Points
The Pew Research Center, “Americans’ Views of Political Division and Unity,” April 2024, states that 78% of Americans say the country is “more divided than united.” Religious affiliation and political identity increasingly overlap, intensifying community polarization. This points to cultural polarization straining relationships and communities. Technological advances have also contributed to the disconnect we see in our world today. In 2024, The State of Online Trust by the Stanford Internet Observatory states that algorithmic amplification of misinformation has increased distrust in institutions and truth claims. This is a big challenge for many people who embrace and believe the Bible as God’s immutable Word and absolute truth. Furthermore, the American Psychological Association (APA, 2023), states that 43% of adults report difficulty concentrating due to constant digital notifications; 60% of teens say social media affects their self‑image. APA, “Stress in America: Technology and Mental Health,”
Constant Cultural Shifts
With all these constant cultural shifts, staying grounded, rooted, and steadfast in Christ can be challenging for believers here in America because we have been blessed with some of the best advances in the world, and our convenience-oriented lifestyle is top-notch. It becomes challenging for believers to fix their eyes on Jesus Christ, as commanded in Hebrews 12:1-3. Moreso, it can be challenging for believers in Christ to stay rooted in God’s Word, prayer, and worship.
Good News For Growth
The good news is that these constant cultural shifts in America provide great opportunities for believers in Christ to experience God’s divine character and His supernatural nature. Without these cultural shifts, faith in God becomes static rather than kinetic. Faith in Christ, according to the scriptures, is meant to be action-oriented, as clearly stated in James 1: 22-25, “But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man observing his natural face in a mirror; for he observes himself, goes away, and immediately forgets what kind of man he was. But he who looks into the perfect law of liberty and continues in it and is not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work, this one will be blessed in what he does.”
Action Item For Spiritual Resiliency
So fellow believers in Christ, in a time when many are “Christians” in name only, here is God’s assurance and charge to His people, in Jeremiah 17: 7-8, “But blessed are those who trust in the Lord and have made the Lord their hope and confidence. They are like trees planted along a riverbank, with roots that reach deep into the water. Such trees are not bothered by the heat or worried by long months of drought. Their leaves stay green, and they never stop producing fruit.” The action item for us then, is to stay RAW- Rooted in Faith in Christ. Anchored In Christ. Walking in Love.
