How old was Aisha (really) when She Married Muhammad? 2026-07-30T21:59:54-05:00 Todd Weller
Patheos Explore the world's faith through different perspectives on religion and spirituality! Patheos has the views of the prevalent religions and spiritualities of the world.

On my Tik Tok page, I posted a hadith which is labeled “Sahih” that showed that Aisha was a child when she was married to Muhammad. The Hadith is Sahih al-Bukhari 6130. The implication of this Hadith is massive if it’s true. Mind you, when a Hadith is labeled “Sahih,” this means that the Hadith is authentic and, thus, authoritative. One can argue that the methodology for determining what is Sahih and what is, say, “Hasan,” or “Daif” is flawed, but this is besides the point.
Sahih al-Bukhari 6130 states:
Narrated `Aisha:
I used to play with the dolls in the presence of the Prophet, and my girl friends also used to play with me. When Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) used to enter (my dwelling place) they used to hide themselves, but the Prophet would call them to join and play with me. (The playing with the dolls and similar images is forbidden, but it was allowed for `Aisha at that time, as she was a little girl, not yet reached the age of puberty.) (Fath-ul-Bari page 143, Vol.13)
What are the Implications?
Well, First, playing with dolls is forbidden if one reached the age of puberty. (As is noted by the hadith itself)
Aisha, as stated by her, was allowed to play with dolls.
This then brings us to a dilemma:
A. Aisha was not at the age of puberty while married to Muhammad. This would mean that Muhammad married a child.
or
B. Muhammad allowed Aisha to sin by playing with dolls. This would mean that Muhammad is a false prophet because he’s intentionally leading Aisha to do something that is forbidden.
Here is how one Muslim tried to get around it:
Tik-Tocker LMF stated:
“dawg everyone knows her older sister Asma is 10 years older than her, and she was was 27-28 around the time of hijrah and the Prophet married Aisha like 1 or 2 years after hijrah so that’d make her 18-19.”
Of course, there are plenty of modern muslim scholars who attempt to get out of Aisha’s age because it’s embarrasing. But this, again, is a modern phenomenon. As we will see, not only does this throw the greatest Hadith collectors under the bus, but it also throws Aisha, the mother of all believers, under the bus and curb-stomps her legacy. She’s supposed to be an imminent scholar who knew the most about Muhammad. But apprently, according to this ticktocker, she doesn’t know her own age (As we will see, she is pretty clear about it later in this article).
Let’s switch gears. Notice that this doesn’t help him. If she was 18-19, and Muhammad is having her play with dolls, then he’s diliberately leading her to sin. This would make him, at best, not the best example for humankind as he’s leading her to sin, or, worse, a false prophet because he is deliberately leading her into sin.
We must note that the evidence for Aisha’s age during her marrriage (and the cosummation thereof) to Muhammad is overwhelming. Let’s look at the evidence:
Sahih Al-Bukhari 5133
Narrated `Aisha:
“that the Prophet (ﷺ) married her when she was six years old and he consummated his marriage when she was nine years old, and then she remained with him for nine years (i.e., till his death).”
How old was Aisha when she was married to Muhammad? Six.
How old was Aisha when the marriage was consummated? Nine.
Let’s look at another one.
Shaih al-Bukhari 5158 (I shared this one in the last article:)
Narrated ‘Urwa:
The Prophet (ﷺ) wrote the (marriage contract) with `Aisha while she was six years old and consummated his marriage with her while she was nine years old and she remained with him for nine years (i.e. till his death).
How old was Aisha when she was married to Muhammad? Six.
How old was Aisha when the marriage was consummated? Nine.
Let’s look at Sahih al-Bukhari 5134:
Narrated `Aisha:
“that the Prophet (ﷺ) married her when she was six years old and he consummated his marriage when she was nine years old. Hisham said: I have been informed that `Aisha remained with the Prophet (ﷺ) for nine years (i.e. till his death).”
How old was Aisha when she was married to Muhammad? Six.
How old was Aisha when the marriage was consummated? Nine.
Let’s look at he Sahih al-Bukhari 3896:
Narrated Hisham’s father:
“Khadija died three years before the Prophet (ﷺ) departed to Medina. He stayed there for two years or so and then he married `Aisha when she was a girl of six years of age, and he consumed that marriage when she was nine years old.”
How old was Aisha when she was married to Muhammad? Six.
How old was Aisha when the marriage was consumed? Nine.
Let’s look at Sahih Muslim 1422b
‘A’isha (Allah be pleased with her) reported:
“Allah’s Apostle (ﷺ) married me when I was six years old, and I was admitted to his house when I was nine years old.”
How old was Aisha when she was married to Muhammad? Six.
How old was Aisha when she was admintted to his house? Nine (Notice the play on words there.)
What about Sahih Muslim 1422d?
‘A’isha (Allah be pleased with her) reported:
“that Allah’s Apostle (ﷺ) married her when she was six years old, and he (the Holy Prophet) took her to his house when she was nine, and when he (the Holy Prophet) died she was eighteen years old”
How old was Aisha when she was married to Muhammad? Six.
How old was Aisha when she was taken to his house? Nine ( I wonder what he did when he took his new wife to his house.)
Sunan an-Nasa’i 3379:
It was narrated that ‘Aishah said:
“The Messenger of Allah married me when I was six, and consummated the marriage with me when I was nine.”
How old was Aisha when she was married to Muhammad? Six.
How old was Aisha when the marriage was consummated? Nine.
Sunan an-Nasa’i 3255:
It was narrated from ‘Aishah that the Messenger of Allah married her when she was six years old, and consummated the marriage with her when she was nine.
How old was Aisha when she was married to Muhammad? Six.
How old was Aisha when the marriage was consummated? Nine.
Sunan an-Nasa’i 3378:
It was narrated that ‘Aishah said:
“The Messenger of Allah married me when I was six, and consummated the marriage with me when I was nine, and I used to play with dolls.
How old was Aisha when she was married to Muhammad? Six.
How old was Aisha when the marriage was consummated? Nine.
Did she play with dolls? Yes.
Sunan Abi Dawud 2121:
Narrated ‘Aishah:
The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) married me when I was seven years old. The narrator Sulaiman said: or Six years. He had intercourse with me when I was nine years old.
How old was Aisha when she was married to Muhammad? Six.
How old was Aisha when Muhammad had intercourse with her? Nine.
Sunan Abi Dawud 4933
Narrated Aisha, Ummul Mu’minin:
The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) married me when I was seven or six. When we came to Medina, some women came. according to Bishr’s version: Umm Ruman came to me when I was swinging. They took me, made me prepared and decorated me. I was then brought to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), and he took up cohabitation with me when I was nine. She halted me at the door, and I burst into laughter.
Abu Dawud said: That is to say: I menstruated, and I was brought in a house, and there were some women of the Ansari in it. They said: With good luck and blessing. The tradition of one of them has been included in the other
How old was Aisha when she was married to Muhammad? Six or Seven.
How old was Aisha when she was brought into the household of Muhammad? Nine.
Is puberty or maturity given as a marker for when cosummation is allowed? No.
The Evidence Is Clear
There is overwhelming evidence that Aisha was six when Muhammad married her. And the evidence is clear that she was nine when she:
- Was admitted to the house of Muhammad.
- Entered the house of Muhammad.
- Had her marrriage “consumed by” Muhammad.
- Had the marriage consummated by Muhammad.
Unless Muslims want to throw their scholars under the bus and reject the Sunnah, they must admit in the same breath, if they are consistent, that:
- Muhammad is the best example for mankind.
- Muhammad married a child.
- Muhammad consummated a marriage with a child.
- Child Marriage is, based on the prophet’s example, permissable.
I want to remind you of Surah 65:4, as a commenter helped and clarified for me in the last article that I posted.
The Iddah for a girl who has not yet menstruated is 3 months. So a child who wants to divorce has a 3 month waiting period before the divorce is finalized.
Note that Surah 65:4 is a prescription. Not simply a description of what people were doing. There are no other prophets to abrogate this verse. No other verses have abrogated this verse. Culture cannot abrogate the words of Allah.
The implication is that Muslims had married children and then wanted to divorce them. Of course, if Muhammad did, in fact marry a child, then we must follow our beautiful example for mankind and our highest moral example.
With all of this mind, is the evidence for Aisha’s age at her marriage and the consummation thereof overwhelming?
Is this the prophet whose example we should follow?
