The Spiral Strega

About Me
I’ve been writing for as long as I can remember. My first journal, a spiral bound notebook accidentally purchased extra during back to school shopping. I was eight and my mom had died the year before. Writing has always been the primary way I both access and process my emotions, thoughts, and beliefs.
Catholicism was the religion of my birth and the first 30 years of my life, but nature based feminist spirituality and Italian folk magic are the calling of my free soul.
I celebrate the rhythms of the seasons, the wheel of the year, the cycles of the moon and my female body, and the invitation into wisdom and wholeness that the Tarot opens for me.
I wrestle with being a woman who has loved Jesus of Nazareth, and sought to be a good daughter of “his” church, not knowing for far too long that the sky is church, the sea is church, the branches overhead are church. The human body is church. The largeness and longing of our hearts are church.
My soul rests in the love of Mother Mary – more simply Mother – whose body is the whole earth, and who has been caged by patriarchy for far too long.
As a woman breaking free from patriarchal religion, I seek connection with my ancestors through learning and practicing Italian folk magic/catholicism. I’ve chosen to put this page under the auspice of the term Strega, which is simply the Italian word for witch.
My spirituality is most beautifully captured in the symbol of a spiral. I did not choose to be a sensitive, a healer, a witch. I have always been these things. Travelling through cycles of life, death, and rebirth with Goddess as the energy that pulls these cycles together and bridges them from one transition to the next is the journey of my soul. She knits the spiral that is my life, in perfect harmony, and I try to be open to its changes.
I am a seeker using words to light my journey, and offering them in the hope they might be a beacon for some other seeker, a balm to another weary soul.
