Lord…Teach Me To Pray

LOGO Patheos Explore the world's faith through different perspectives on religion and spirituality! Patheos has the views of the prevalent religions and spiritualities of the world.

He was praying in a certain place, and after he had finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, as John taught his disciples.” 2 He said to them, “When you pray, say:

Father, hallowed be your name.
    Your kingdom come.
3     Give us each day our daily bread.
4     And forgive us our sins,
for we ourselves forgive everyone indebted to us.
And do not bring us to the time of trial.”-Luke 11:1-4 NRSV

Lord Teach Me

The reading from today’s Mass comes from the Gospel of St. Luke.  As you read the Gospel they probably sound a little familiar.  This is Luke’s account of the Lord’s prayer, and at Mass we say the version from the Gospel of Matthew.  Luke’s is a little shorter and more of a summary of what Christ said, but still important for us.

In all things we need to remember who God is, treat who he is with respect and honor.  We are to treat his name with the sanctity that the Lord himself demands.  His kingdom will come again, but we are supposed to assist in bringing his kingdom.  Do people around us know that we are Christians?  Are we allowing the grace of Christ to work in us and through is so that the world can change in some small way?

Lord Feed Us And Forgive Us

We pray for the Lord to provide for us, and we also pray for the gift of the Eucharist.  The Eucharist is the bread of life.  Jesus is truly present, and we long for this most precious gift.  Lord feeds us with the very gift of himself to change us.  May we not take it for granted.  Lord feed us and help us to understand this precious gift in a deeper way.

We also pray for forgiveness, because we all mess up.  We need the grace of Christ to live the Christian life, and we need to remember that we are sinners in need of forgiveness.  I urge you to frequent the sacrament of reconciliation to grow in virtue and live in a state of grace.  As we are forgiven we are also commanded to forgive others.  This prayer says such as much.

Forgive us as we forgive others.  We say this every Sunday at Mass, but how many of us are holding on to the burden of a grudge.  Who have we not forgiven?  As we say these words of Christ on a daily basis let us examine our hearts to extend the forgiveness that we have been given to others.

Saint Quotes

Prayer is an aspiration of the heart, it is a simple glance directed to heaven, it is a cry of gratitude and love in the midst of trail as well as joy; finally, it is something great, supernatural, which expands my soul and unites me to Jesus.-St.Therese of Lisieux

Prayer ought to be humble, fervent, resigned, persevering, and accompanied with great reverence. One should consider that he stands in the presence of a God, and speaks with a Lord before whom the angels tremble from awe and fear.-Saint Mary Magdalen de Pazzi

How often I failed in my duty to God, because I was not leaning on the strong pillar of prayer.-St. Teresa of Avila
